University of Arizona Mining & Geological Engineering

MGE, founded along with the university itself, is one of the UA’s two oldest departments. Researchers are known for their life-changing and lifesaving collaborative research. Students, who benefit from a close-knit community with long-standing ties to the global mining industry, come from as near as Tucson and as far away as Mongolia to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees and professional certificates. They gain experience working in the San Xavier Underground Mining Lab and doing paid internships with major companies and local startups, focusing on everything from mineral exploration and land restoration to the business of mining. Industry relies on UA Mining and Geological Engineering not only for a well-prepared workforce but also for R&D – think safety sensors, tailings turned into building materials and water preservation techniques.
