What do Greek olive oil and healthcare innovation have in common? More than you’d think. On this episode of AHI Show, I had the chance to sit down with David Sylvan, a leader who’s reshaping how we think about hospitals, technology, and access to care. David is the Chief Strategy, Innovation, and Marketing Officer at University Hospitals and the President of University Hospitals Ventures. His job? To turn ideas into real, lasting impact. But what makes him different? He’s not just focused on shiny new tech. He’s focused on what actually works. He and his team don’t chase trends. They embed themselves inside the system, side by side with clinicians, to spot problems and solve them before they become crises. One of their biggest wins? A new continuous monitoring system that reduced maternal care complications to zero. Yes, zero. David’s approach to innovation reminds me of something close to home…my family roots in Chios, Greece. There, olive trees don’t grow fast. They take time. They grow deep roots. The best oil comes from patience, precision, and knowing what to prune and what to nurture. Healthcare innovation ought to be the same. Not every idea is worth chasing. The best ones come from listening, observing, and taking action with discipline. This conversation is packed with insights for anyone in healthcare, innovation, or leadership. Give it a listen. Let me know what stands out to you. __ Enjoy this? ?? Repost it to your network and follow Michael Stamatinos for more.

Congratulations to UH Chief Executive Officer Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair, and UH Chief Financial Officer Bradley Bond, CFA, CPA, MBA, for being named to Becker's Healthcare's “30 Highly Successful CEO-CFO Duos” list for 2024. According to Becker’s, “for hospitals and health systems to thrive, CEOs and CFOs must work hand in hand, aligning their visions and strategies for long-term success. In recent years, healthcare organizations nationwide have navigated complex challenges like workforce shortages and the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic. These dynamic CEO-CFO duos have tackled those issues head-on, blending innovation with results-driven decision-making to foster resilience, growth and sustainability within their healthcare organizations.” In naming them to the list, Becker’s noted that “Dr. Megerian, CEO, and Mr. Bond, CFO, have cultivated University Hospitals' growth into a $6 billion health system with 32,000 employees, 21 hospitals and over 200 physician offices across 16 counties. A top research institution, the system secured $197 million in funding with more than 3,400 active clinical trials. In addition, the system operates one of the largest accountable care organizations, covering 608,000 members. As a CEO-CFO duo, their financial initiatives, including the revenue and expense cabinets, have driven over $300 million in operating margin improvements, while reducing Medicare costs by $100 million in four years and earning $45 million in shared savings in 2023. Also in 2023, UH contributed $14.3 billion to Northeast Ohio’s economy, representing a 38% increase since 2019. The system also received a record-breaking $230 million in community support and invested $707 million in community health, earning U.S. News & World Report’s distinction as Ohio’s only hospital recognized for equitable access for 2024-25.” #UHProud Read more: https://lnkd.in/dnUmZ473 #healthcareleadership #leadership #innovation #growth #resilience #sustainability

The RELIEF? ureteral?stent, invented by urologist Lee Ponsky,MD FACS, Chair of the UH Urology Institute, has achieved FDA clearance as the first and only stent approved to prevent vesicoureteral reflux. This condition, during which urine flows backward from the bladder to one or both ureters and sometimes to the kidneys, is a major cause of patient discomfort. Dr. Ponsky is also the Leo & Charlotte Goldberg Chair in Advanced Surgical Therapies and Master Clinician in Urologic Oncology at UH. Ureteral stents allow urine to flow from the kidney to the bladder, bypassing blockage caused by kidney stones, strictures or swelling of the ureter (which connects the kidney to the bladder). However, those currently available can have complication rates as high as 80%, causing significant patient pain and discomfort. This, in turn, often leads to additional medical attention and replacement procedures. In fact, pain related to vesicoureteral reflux occurs 63% of the time with the current standard ureteral stents. In contrast, a clinical study using the RELIEF stent demonstrated 0% vesicoureteral reflux, making it a promising new alternative. “I understood the problems with existing stent designs from not only my clinical work in urology, but also from the experience I had myself as a ureteral stent patient,” says Dr. Ponsky. “Using current stents is often painful for patients.?We are very excited for patients to have an option that really differentiates itself from all other existing stents, and we look forward to seeing patients’ improved quality of life through this novel design.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/gmMg8mfw #vesicoureteralreflux #ureteralstent #urology #healthcareinnovation #physicianexcellence #patientsfirst
