Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men. Jonathan Shoag, MD, a board-certified urologist at UH Urologic Institute, is working to better understand how aging-related diseases such as prostate cancer develop – and to find better therapies. A focus of his work is understanding why some people develop diseases of aging, while others do not. “We are looking to understand the mechanisms underlying disease predisposition, as well as what factors modify this process, using the latest advances in DNA sequencing technologies,” he says. “The National Institutes of Health has awarded my group, along with collaborators at NYU, an R01 grant to further this area of study.” In addition, Shany Picciotto, PhD, a postdoc in Dr. Shoag’s lab, has received a Research Scholar Award from the American Urological Association – one of only 15 researchers in the U.S. to do so. Dr. Picciotto will conduct a two-year study of how chemotherapy impacts mutation burden in normal cells and how this may impact mutations in the children of cancer survivors. Dr. Shoag is also working to develop more effective therapies against prostate cancer. He received a $1.1 million Physician Research Grant from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program of the U.S. Department of Defense – one of only six researchers in the country to receive this grant for fiscal year 2024. “My lab leveraged large-scale clinical data to discover a new target in prostate cancer,” Dr. Shoag says. “This grant will support understanding this target in mice, cells and patient-derived prostate cancer models?to help us better understand prostate cancer biology and ultimately develop better therapies, which will benefit patients with advanced disease.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/gpsPu-Ed #prostatecancer #NIH #research #physicianexcellence #patientsfirst

Prostate enlargement is common in men over 50 and can lead to urinary dysfunction as well as bladder or kidney problems. Historically, there wasn’t much that could be done, and even treatments developed a century ago were often complicated. Recovery could last several weeks, with the patient enduring restrictions and discomfort during that time. Thankfully, today there are other options to deal with enlarged prostates. At UH, patients of urologic surgeon Michael Zell, MD, are often surprised at how simple and efficient the procedure can be, with the patient frequently being discharged the same day, and recovery lasting only a few days more. Dr. Zell, along with Dr. Irina Jaeger, are among just a few surgeons in Ohio, and a very small percentage of surgeons in the country, who perform the HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) procedure, and among even fewer surgeons who perform it with great frequency. HoLEP requires no incision. Surgical entry is through the urethra, and whether the prostate is small or very large is irrelevant, and then the extremely precise holmium laser is used to cut through the prostate. Almost all of these procedures are done on an outpatient basis, and the patient returns for catheter removal within 24 to 48 hours, with a quick return to normal function. Patients tell Dr. Zell how quickly their lives changed post-op. “It’s like night and day,” they’ll say. For months and years, they had suffered with complications that occur when the enlarged prostate interferes with bladder function. “Seeing patients get better is the most rewarding part for all of us,” Dr. Zell says.
