We're growing the STEM community one student at a time! At this recent workshop hosted by UHN's STEM Pathways program, grade 11 and 12 students were invited to the Image-Guided Discovery Lab at UHN's Toronto General Hospital for the first time. #TeamUHN scientists, trainees and research staff gave the group an introductory lesson to human anatomy, exploring the heart, spine and brain through 3D-printed models. Staff volunteers also lead a tour of the lab, showcasing the type of work they do and the clinical applications of 3D printing. Learn more about UHN STEM Pathways, discover how we strive to make STEM more accessible, and register for upcoming events: https://bit.ly/4bDHVRF

The power of all is required to make meaningful change. Join us today, and every day, in spotlighting women's achievements, recognizing adversities, and supporting our friends and colleagues. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD

  • This week, we shine a spotlight on the amazing dental assistants at UHN! Meet Celia Filipe, one of #TeamUHN's Preventative Dental Assistants, who plays a foundational role in ensuring dental practices run smoothly while delivering exceptional care to patients. “What I love about being a dental assistant is serving patients and supporting them through their treatment journey. As dental assistants, we are a patient's first contact with the dental clinic. We introduce ourselves and make them feel comfortable and relaxed before they see the dentist.” To Celia and all the dental assistants at UHN: your hard work and commitment make a lasting impact on every patient you care for. Thank you for all that you do! #DentalAssistantsRecognitionWeek #TeamUHN #DentalAssistant

  • March is #NutritionMonth! Introducing myPlate, an initiative that gives patients the opportunity to choose their meals with the help of a dietary aide. The initiative is part of a larger four-phase plan to improve food and service for in-patients across multiple UHN sites, promote food consumption and reduce overall food waste. "When people can select what they want to eat, they're typically going to like it, so they're going to have the proper intake and that helps in their recovery," says Dylan Xu, Nutrition Services Manager for Patient Food Delivery at UHN sites. • How is artificial intelligence being used to improve outcomes for cardiac patients? UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre AI team has led over 135 transformative projects, many of which have been published in top medical journals worldwide. Our cardiologists and surgeons are employing AI algorithms to analyze massive amounts of imaging and biological data from ultrasounds, MRIs, CT scans and more to better predict heart health risks. The results are leading to more accurate risk forecasts and more personalized treatment plans for stroke, heart failure, aortic aneurysms and other conditions. “The future of medicine is going to be AI-enabled," says Dr. Barry Rubin, medical director of Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. "Algorithms that the AI team has developed are being used by health-care providers and researchers around the world and are impacting the lives of millions of patients.” Explore some of the groundbreaking projects that are currently underway with our AI team in today's The Globe and Mail feature: https://lnkd.in/gRnUiTx6

  • Researchers at UHN's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre have identified a new classification of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive form of bone marrow and blood cancer. In a team led by Drs. Anastasia Tikhonova, Mark Gower, and Soheil Jahangiri, researchers analyzed the molecular and genetic profiles of patient bone marrow samples at the single-cell level to find new biomarkers of high-risk disease. They found that about one-third of the samples had elevated markers of inflammation and were more like stem cells, which is a sign of cancer development and growth. This new classification offers hope for personalized therapy for patients. Read more about the research: https://lnkd.in/gcNpfcWC
