We’re thrilled to announce that The Weather Company has adopted the JEDI system to improve everyday forecasts. A forecast is only as good as the atmospheric observations that are used to kick it off. But we observe the atmosphere with so many different tools — ??planes, ???satellites, ??weather balloons, ??ships, ???wx stations on land, and more — that quickly wrangling the data into a format that can be efficiently used by models is a monumental challenge. Enter JEDI, the Joint Effort for Data Assimilation Integration developed by Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation, which provides the highest quality analysis available of the current state of the atmosphere for use by modeling systems. (Check out some of the many observations assimilated by JEDI in the pic.) Learn more about his partnership and how it’s improving forecasts. https://lnkd.in/gzjUdRsY

Illuminating and exciting collaboration with NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research, Southwest Research Institute and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration! ??
PUNCH is officially in space! ??? Riding with SPHEREx on the Falcon 9, PUNCH (Polarimeter to UNify the Corona and Heliosphere) is a suite of 4 suitcase-sized satellites that will continually map the flow of the solar wind as it leaves the corona and enters the heliosphere. The mission will help answer questions about how solar wind impacts space weather, which can cause dazzling auroras but also interfere with technology on Earth. Sarah Gibson from NSF NCAR’s High Altitude Observatory has been instrumental in this project’s development, which is being led by the Southwest Research Institute.? The research from NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research doesn't only advance our understanding of Earth system science, but it also benefits our society, helping vulnerable communities to be prepared for the impacts of severe weather.
Atmospheric rivers can bring much-needed rain and snow to the U.S. West Coast, but they can also cause damaging floods.?? To better understand how these rivers in the sky transport water globally as well as how the resulting local precipitation impacts people living in the Western U.S., NSF NCAR scientists created this sophisticated visualization. They used a combination of two models: ?? the Community Earth System Model (CESM) & ?? the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS). This combo allowed them to study both the large-scale and small-scale aspects of atmospheric rivers. Studies like these can help meteorologists, water managers, and emergency responders anticipate how much water will fall and where. This allows vulnerable communities to prepare for potential severe weather and flooding. Full video: https://lnkd.in/gDihgyHm #atmosphericrivers #weatherevents #severeweather #communitymodels
