It’s British Science Week – a time to celebrate science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM) across the UK. Did you know that international students play a vital role in the UK’s scientific breakthroughs? International postgraduate research (PGR) students are at the heart of the UK’s science and innovation ecosystem. Our research into the non-economic contributions of international postgraduate students to the UK highlights how they drive progress in key STEM fields, from AI and engineering to computer science and physics. We found that international PGR students: ? Study STEM subjects at a 3:2 ratio. ? Make up a large proportion of student cohorts across key subject areas for the UK’s global science superpower and economic growth ambitions, including for strategically significant technologies areas such as artificial intelligence and engineering biology. ? Provide insights, technical capacity and global networks which are essential to the UK’s global science ambitions. ?? New data has revealed that university graduates make up 50% of the workforce in the West Midlands and account for a significant proportion of the workforce in key growth sectors highlighted in the government’s industrial strategy ?? The analysis, which was conducted by Universities UK (UUK), shows the impact of graduates in the workforce across key growth sectors and the important role they play in driving national and regional growth. Professor Trevor McMillan OBE, Vice-Chancellor of Keele University, said: “We often focus on the positive impact of university for individuals, and the skills and knowledge they can acquire during their degrees. But what’s just as pertinent is the huge impact that graduates have on the regions where they live and work, both as individuals and collectively. This analysis by Universities UK demonstrates the profoundly positive impact that graduates have in strengthening the economy, and the even greater potential they can unlock for promoting growth, both across the West Midlands and nationally.” Find out more ?? https://bit.ly/3FlupGd
