Today Parker officially began her journey as the future CEO of Universal CPA Review. We’re going to spend the next 20 years building mental maps, crushing a few science fairs, breezing through an accounting degree, and casually grabbing an Elijah Watt Sells award when knocking out the #CPAExams. She will then immediately take over Universal CPA Review and fire me on day 1. What could go wrong, right? That was definitely not the case for me. The reality is I very much struggled in school. I was disorganized, I never had a plan, I showed up to class literally having zero idea that there was a test that day, and my mom (god bless her), would celebrate me getting a few B’s on my school report cards as if I just got accepted into Harvard Business School. Keep in mind, this all went down in arguably the worst public school system in the country. My dad did the best he could. He tried to send me to a military high school to get it together, but I quickly got kicked out … well, they were cool about it by wording it as “I wasn’t a fit”. When I didn’t get into any four-year colleges, my fear of failure finally set in. I realized that if I don’t start taking my education seriously that there was a very real chance that I wouldn’t ever find success. I shut off from everything and everybody, basically had to teach myself how to read, and bulldozed my way into a 4.0 GPA. I transferred to DePaul University and the rest was history. To this day, I still have immense PTSD from that fear of failure instilled in me. However, I am grateful for that fear, because it has undoubtedly become my fuel. Whether it’s the fear of failure, or a burning desire to find success, I challenge all CPA candidates out there to first figure out your “why”, then subsequently use it as fuel. Never run away from it because it's meant to feel hard. Having the opportunity to be a licensed CPA not only demonstrates an academic expertise in one of the most rigorous academic disciplines, but it also provides a background that truly delivers tangible value. How many professions can say that they are not expendable, or that they are recession proof? ?I can think of like, 6… So, whether you are starting preschool, a freshman in college, or a CPA candidate struggling to pass your exams, always remember… Good things take time, and you are never out of the fight.

I'm grateful to Laura Lantz, the Idaho Society of CPAs (ISCPA), and the faculty at Boise State University for their warm hospitality! Aiming to improve the CPA pipeline starts with rebranding the accounting profession and emphasizing the extensive value that the CPA license brings. An overhaul to the #cpaexam format and the content tested requires a new exam preparation strategy. Universal CPA Review will continue to support CPA firms, universities, and societies in providing CPA candidates with visually-driven study resources. It was a pleasure to meet with various #CPA firm management teams, university faculty, and the students on campus. Also, if you haven’t visited Boise Idaho yet you’re missing out. Talk about a sneaky beautiful city. Already looking forward to next time!
