Our conference rooms are named after many of these extraordinary individuals as a tribute to them. ? One such legend is Seymour Roger Cray (September 28, 1925 – October 5, 1996). Known as "the father of supercomputing," Cray was an American electrical engineer and supercomputer architect who revolutionized the industry. He designed groundbreaking machines that held the title of the World's fastest computers for decades. His first masterpiece, the Cray-1, was installed at Los Alamos Laboratory and played a key role in calculations critical to space exploration. ? Since then, technology has come a long way. Check out these FUN facts: ? --The Cray-1 weighed 5.5 tons and could perform 80 million floating-point operations per second. --Compare that to the iPhone 15, which weighs just 183 grams and delivers a staggering 35 trillion operations per second. ? In perspective, the iPhone 15 is more than 27,000 times lighter than the Cray-1 and has the processing power of 437 Cray-1 computers. Mind-blowing, right? ? But it's not just technology that's evolved. The manufacturing processes behind these innovations have also grown leaps and bounds — from through-hole technology (still in use today) to advanced surface-mount techniques, microelectronic assembly, and state-of-the-art semiconductor packaging. ?
