After an ATV accident landed her in the hospital, a patient was sure her dreams of junior prom were crushed. A serious arm injury, stay in the ICU and 9 arm surgeries were her new reality. Mom said, “My daughter was in the hospital for 19 days. We had so many incredible nurses but the most amazing was MaKenzie. Her junior prom was coming up the week after her accident. Every night, she'd dream about putting on her dress and would wake up in the hospital. I mentioned this to her nurse, and the day of prom, I told MaKenzie that my daughter’s boyfriend was bringing flowers and dinner. She sprang into action and got Child Life involved to decorate the meeting room and plan a ‘prom’ for my daughter. It was amazing. We all cried when she took her first walk down the hall to the room. Every day, MaKenzie went above and beyond. My daughter trusted and listened to her. We love MaKenzie and will never forget how she took care of my daughter.” MaKenzie’s family attended the makeshift prom, too, including her mom who's a nurse at UnityPoint Health. Makenzie's received a much-deserved DAISY Award ?? for the wonderful care she provided. Join a team who cares: https://lnkd.in/enjJQFYK

Meet some of the team members in our Veteran's CommUNITY Network. Understanding the significance of a place to connect, we have an employee resource group dedicated to healthcare workers who've served our country. There, active duty members and veterans share experiences and lend support one another. This safe space is one of several different CommUNITY Networks across our health system for people with similar identities, backgrounds and experiences to engage in meaningful conversations. “If not me, then who?” Those words resonate with Lynn Geick, MD. A soldier’s son used them when he told his parents why he was enlisting. Dr. Geick, a family physician, has a deep respect for veterans. As a young child, his grandparents marked the day with solitude and drawing the blinds after losing a child in World War II. “They never really recovered from that loss,” Dr. Geick says. One day, he decided to dedicate an exam room wall to honor local veterans. He asked his veteran patients if they'd allow him to put up their photos — moments of pride from their time in service. Soon, the wall filled with images of patients in uniform, standing strong, from different eras and branches of the military. It became a conversation piece, where patients would share stories of their service. Dr. Geick listens, often learning something new about their unique healthcare needs. By putting these pictures up, Dr. Geick not only honors their service but reminds others of the importance of addressing the specific health concerns veterans face. Many suffer from conditions like PTSD, chronic pain and exposure to toxins during their service. Dr. Geick urges healthcare providers to remain vigilant about these issues, offering tailored care and support for the sacrifices veterans made. He even uses the stories on the wall to spark conversation with young patients about citizenship and character. When asked why he’s so compelled to keep these stories alive, he says, “If not me, then who?” Join a team who cares: https://lnkd.in/enjJQFYK
