关于我们
United Way of San Diego County is improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of the San Diego community. Everyone deserves opportunities to have a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health. Our Vision United Way envisions a vibrant community built on opportunity for everyone. Our Mission To spark breakthrough community action that elevates every child and family toward a brighter future. The foundation for a child’s success starts with family stability. That’s why United Way is primarily invested in the early years: to set kids on the right path toward academic achievement. Because without a solid start in school, most kids won’t succeed. And without family stability – a supportive home, enough income to live, access to health care – a child can’t thrive in school. United Way helps fill in the gaps. We all benefit when our neighbors are successful and thriving. Join the movement! Stay updated on positive change in San Diego and be the first to hear about our events and opportunities to engage through volunteering and advocacy by subscribing to our bi-monthly newsletter at uwsd.org.

?? Literacy is a key predictor of lifelong success, yet children across the U.S. currently struggle to meet 4th-grade reading and writing benchmarks. To help inspire children to develop a love of reading, our President and CEO, Nancy L. Sasaki, partnered with Allison Ohle, Executive Director of Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership (DEEP), to co-author an op-ed outlining simple, effective ways parents and caregivers can encourage early learning and curiosity in their children—starting as early as the first five years. After all, parents, grandparents, and other caregivers are their child’s best and most important first teachers. It truly takes a village to raise our children, and by uniting families, educators, and community members, we can work together to strengthen childhood literacy for generations to come. ?? Last week, UWSD had the privilege of visiting San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, where we held our Executive Leadership Retreat! Offering spectacular views of our city and harbor, it was an inspiring opportunity for our leaders to collaborate and explore new ways to strengthen our community. A huge thank you to the San Diego Airport Authority, a long-time partner of UWSD, for hosting us and for their dedication to making San Diego a first-class place to visit!

??Looking for ways to lower your energy bill? Check out these tips to help you save on your bill during the cold weather.? 1. Block the chill. Caulk and weather-strip around drafty doors and windows. You can also use a door sweep, door sock or towel at the bottom of doors if there is a gap.?? 2. Keep your furnace and air filters clean. Check furnace filters once a month and replace them regularly. A dirty air filter can increase your energy costs and cause problems with your equipment.?? 3. Set your ceiling fan to run clockwise. This causes the fan to produce an updraft, forcing the hot air that rises to your ceiling down and into the rest of the room.?In the summer, you can switch the fans to counterclockwise to keep the room cool.? ?? Since Valentine's Day falls in the middle of #BlackHistoryMonth, we think it's a perfect time to celebrate the powerful contributions of the many Black American leaders during who fearlessly defied the odds to shape the beautiful community we know and love today. ?? Henrietta Goodwin: In 1913, Henrietta (seated on the right) was the first African American graduate from what is now SDSU, though her name was left off official lists. ?? First Black American Firefighters: In 1919, the San Diego Fire Department welcomed its first Black firefighters, marking an important step in diversity and equality within the community. ?? Dr. Kimbrough: In 1935, Dr. Kimbrough became the first African American dentist in San Diego. He later became an influential leader, serving as president of the San Diego NAACP and Urban League to fight for civil rights. ? Johnny Ritchey: In 1948, Ritchey (far right) broke the color barrier in the Pacific Coast League as a player for the Padres—just one year after Jackie Robinson's MLB debut—paving the way for future Black athletes. ??? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: While on a speaking tour of California in 1964, Dr. King visited both California Western University and SDSU, speaking out against Proposition 14, which allowed housing discrimination. His visit highlighted the urgent need for change in both San Diego and California. We celebrate these inspiring individuals and many others who have made our community stronger and more inclusive. Together, United Way of San Diego County will continue to build on their legacy for the month of February and beyond.
