You KNOW we had to have a team breakfast at Stockholm Inn to check out the new United Way placemats! You'll be seeing these periodically throughout the year, and we hope they'll inspire you to get involved, give back, and take action for our kids' future! #UnitedforLiteracy #UWRRV - Special thanks to Stockholm Inn and Meridian for partnering with us to produce these placemats!

How cute are these pictures from our friends at Severson Dells? Their Reading Room brings literacy to Science Saturday - we are so proud to partner with them and bring the power of stories to more children in the community. #UnitedforLiteracy #UWRRV #SeversonDells #Literacy #Reading

If we could get every child in Winnebago County to this level, we as a community would be unstoppable!
??Building bridges, empowering communities, and driving?? measurable, lasting impact ??Award-Winning Emerging Tech Influencer????NH 2024 most influential business leaders??Tedx Speaker?? Keynote Speaker??Lawyer ?? Author
??Imagine attending a conference or event, and your keynote speaker is a 4-year-old. ??No, seriously—watch the video below.???? ??"I will stand before you and speak with confidence and not be afraid. Reading every day has made me smarter. Reading has also strengthened my vocabulary and language skills." ????These were the words of then 4-year-old Caleb Stewart, who delivered an inspiring and motivating speech to librarians about the power of reading. ??His confidence, passion, and message serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of early childhood exposure—whether it’s in ?? reading, STEAM/STEM, or other foundational skills. ?? Why does this matter?? ??Research shows that early experiences shape a child’s future in profound ways. A study found that children whose parents are inventors are 10 times more likely to become inventors themselves. ??This isn’t just about genetics—it’s about exposure, access, and environment. Kids who grow up around innovation are far more likely to dream big, create, and contribute to the world in meaningful ways. ??This is why investing in early learning and enrichment programs is critical. ?? When we provide children with high-quality curriculum, resources, and support, we’re not just helping them succeed in school—we’re shaping the next generation of inventors, innovators, and leaders. ??This morning, I showed Caleb’s video to my 6-year-old and her reaction was immediate. She grabbed a book and asked her older sister to read with her. ????This is why I support initiatives that empower our children to learn, grow, and thrive—and you should too! ?? As part of Black History Month, we want to highlight a woman whose contributions to local education changed our county forever. Margie Sturgis was the first Black woman in Winnebago County to be a full-time educator, starting her local career in 1953 at Lincoln Park Elementary school as a fourth grade teacher. 12 years later she became a teacher at Auburn High School. She was deeply involved in the community and was a trailblazer who led the way for desegregated education careers in our area. Among many other honors, Sturgis won the Rockford Excalibur Award in 1977 for her tireless advocacy for the Black community, prisoner’s rights, and education reform. #BlackHistoryMonth #Education

Without your support, we could not do what we do for the community. Whether you're a donor, a volunteer, or a partner organization: WE LOVE YOU! ?? You are the reason we can reach so many children and families with our literacy initiative, why we can fund programs like 211 or provide space for resources in our Strong Neighborhood Houses. THANK YOU! #UnitedIsTheWay #UWRRV #UnitedforLiteracy #Community #StrongNeighborhoods

Jessica Iasparro, our Director of Community Impact, visiting Washington DC last week! On her trip she spent time spreading the word about childhood literacy and learning about new ways to expand our efforts in Winnebago County. More than ever, it is vital for our children and our community to learn skills like literacy that directly impact our understanding of the world around us. Media literacy, financial literacy, and community engagement all start with the ability to read. #ReadingChangesEverything #UnitedforLiteracy #UWRRV #Literacy
