Read our campaign's statement on the recent termination of most USAID contracts, including contracts for life-saving malaria programs: https://lnkd.in/g678GRuJ Margaret McDonnell, Executive Director of United to Beat Malaria: “Halting the work of the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative will endanger the lives of young children, pregnant women and families around the world. It will increase the threat of infection to Americans working, traveling, and serving overseas, and the potential for malaria outbreaks here in the U.S.”

A suspension of malaria programs through the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) will lead to a significant rise in malaria rates globally. According to a modeling analysis by the Malaria Atlas Project: A 90-day PMI suspension would result in 1.7 million additional cases and 17,000 additional deaths;? A 6-month PMI suspension would result in 5 million additional cases and 43,200 additional deaths; A 1-year PMI suspension would result in 14.9 million additional cases and 107,000 additional deaths. Annē Linn, a sixth-generation Montana resident, served as a technical advisor for the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative for six years before being?furloughed earlier this month along with over 2,000 fellow USAID employees. "I have been so proud to tell my children about my work and the American greatness it represented," Ms. Linn said in an?OpEd published in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. "In the 30 countries where PMI works, the malaria mortality rate has been reduced by half since [PMI] was launched in 2006 by George W. Bush. If this is not a show of American strength, I don’t know what is." In this video, Ms. Linn talks about her experiences working for PMI, the far-reaching impact of these programs, and the long-term implications of halting these vital services. Check out this OpEd by Timothy Ziemer, the first Global Malaria Coordinator who headed the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative when it launched in 2005. "I’m concerned that we are weakening our status as a world leader by pulling the plug on critical programs that make us strong in the face of foreign adversaries who wish to undermine our influence. Within DOGE’s quest to reduce waste, America’s anti-malaria strategy, one of our nation’s most successful initiatives of the past 20 years, has essentially been shut off." https://lnkd.in/gMrcGxgd

A remarkable success story to kick off your week??: A Rwandan startup, CHARIS UAS, is using drone technology to effectively target mosquito populations, reducing malaria cases by 90% in the two pilot districts! Working with the government, CHARIS is deploying drones equipped with geomapping technology to precisely target mosquito breeding sites in wetlands, farms, and other hard-to-reach areas. They’re also equipped with spraying systems for application of eco-friendly VectoBac WG larvicides that combat the mosquito population at the larval stage, before they mature and spread disease.
