The U.S. Senate today confirmed Sharad H. Desai to serve as a U.S. district judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. Judge Desai is an intelligent, thoughtful and courteous attorney who will serve the District well in his new role,” said Chief U.S. District Judge Jennifer G. Zipps, District of Arizona. Desai has served as vice president and general counsel for Honeywell International Inc.’s Integrated Supply Chain and Information Technology Departments in Phoenix since 2023. Previously, he served in various other executive general counsel and litigation counsel roles at Honeywell starting in 2015. He was a litigation partner in private practice at Osborn Maledon, P.A., for eight years before joining Honeywell. While in law school, he was a summer associate at Cravath, Swain & Moore LLP in 2005, a summer law clerk for Osborn Maledon, P.A., in 2005 and a summer law clerk for the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Arizona in 2004. Following law school, Desai clerked for the Honorable Rebecca White Berch, Arizona Supreme Court, from 2006 to 2007. He has been a member of the South Asian Bar Association of Arizona since 2018. ??

She clerked for the Honorable Robert H. Whaley of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington from 1997 to 1999. Judge Pennell has been a member of the Yakima County Bar Association since 2014. She was a member of the Washington State Board for Judicial Administration from 2020 to 2024 and was chair of the board’s Court Education Committee from 2023 to 2024. Judge Pennell was a member of the National Association of Women Judges in 2016. Judge Pennell, along with her judicial colleagues, received the 2023 Judge William Nevins Award from the Washington Judges Foundation for their outstanding contribution to youth education and/or the public understanding of the law and the role of the judiciary in American society.??

The U.S. Senate voted yesterday to confirm U.S. Magistrate Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai to serve as a U.S. district judge for the District of Oregon. Judge Kasubhai will maintain chambers in Eugene.? “The District of Oregon is thrilled to know that the Senate has confirmed Magistrate Judge Mustafa Kasubhai as our newest district judge in Eugene,” said Chief U.S. District Judge Michael McShane, District of Oregon. “Judge Kasubhai has not just served the district in his magistrate capacity since 2018, he has provided the Oregon bar with profound leadership; championing professionalism, mentorship, access to justice, and inclusion. He has served as a role model for a generation of law students, attorneys, and judges who have had the privilege of working with him,” Judge McShane noted. Judge Kasubhai has served as a U.S. magistrate judge for the District of Oregon since Sept. 21, 2018. Before his appointment to the federal bench, Judge Kasubhai was a Lane County Circuit Court judge in Eugene from 2007 to 2018. Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference Brings Legal Luminaries and Topical, Robust Discussions to Sacramento The 2024 Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, “Navigating Legal Frontiers: Inspiring Ideas and Innovation,” held July 22-25 in Sacramento, California, was an inspiring, educational gathering for over 700 judges and lawyer representatives who attended. Over the three-and-a-half days, judges and lawyer representatives attended general sessions including a review of the Supreme Court activities, discussions on the effect of AI on legal practitioners, the intersection of law, policy and science on the climate, the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, specialty courts, the effects of the?Dobbs v. Jackson?decision, legal complexities of reality crime shows and the effect of recent Supreme Court decisions on Native American tribal laws. Especially noteworthy were the addresses by District Judge Robert J. Conrad Jr., director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts,?and Elizabeth B. Prelogar, Solicitor General of the United States as well as a conversation with Lina M. Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission. As always, there was great interest in the Conversation with the Justice, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, on the final day of the conference.
