Research shows that students who participate in mentor relationships miss fewer school days, are less likely to participate in negative behaviors, and are more likely to graduate on time. In Palm Beach County, nearly 1,000 kids are waiting to be matched with a mentor who can make a difference in their lives. Becoming a mentor is simple—all it takes is showing up and being yourself. Discover how you can get involved at our next recruitment event on Thursday, December 5, from 6-8 PM at Jojo's Raw Bar & Grill in Wellington. Make a lasting impact—become a mentor today! In honor of #VeteransDay, we're proudly spotlighting our staff members who are also veterans or are part of a veteran family. Our President and CEO, Laurie George, Ph.D., CFRE, is the proud mom to Sergeant Casey George. Sergeant George was active in the Marine Corps from 2019 to 2024 and is now in the Reserves. When asked what veteran issues are most important to Laurie, she cited mental health issues and suicide prevention. She shared that fewer than 25% of veterans receive adequate mental health services. Sadly, 37 veterans in Palm Beach County died by suicide in 2022, which is 2.5 times the rate of their civilian counterparts. Her advice to other parents of service members is to send care packages, especially during times of crisis in their deployments. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach is an organization that has been instrumental in these efforts. Laurie is proud of United Way’s MISSION UNITED program which supports nonprofit agencies serving over 8,000 veterans in Palm Beach County. Thank you, Sergeant George, and all the courageous men and women who served our country to defend our freedom. #UnitedIsTheWayPBC

In honor of #VeteransDay, we're proudly spotlighting our staff members who are also veterans or are part of a veteran family. Our Senior Vice President of Development, Brian Edwards, served in the United States Marine Corps from 1974 to 1998. Starting as a Private First Class and retiring as Chief Warrant Officer 3, Brian spent his career in Personnel Administration, with time both with the infantry and aviation units. To Brian, Veterans Day is a time to reflect on sacrifices made and to recognize that less than one-half of one percent of Americans serve in the military. It's a reminder for all of us to honor the sacrifices of veterans, whether they served for 4 years or 30 years. Brian’s military background still influences his approach to work and life. His first boss, Master Gunnery Sergeant Gilliam, taught him the importance of precision and attention to detail—a lesson that still shapes his professional life today. Brian shared that military service isn’t for everyone, but the freedoms we enjoy are because of the sacrifices made by those who served. He is grateful for his service and for the ability to live in a country where people can freely choose their paths. Thank you for your service, Brian, and for continuing to inspire us all!
