United States Bartenders' Guild Chapter Leader Frederic Yarm- USBG Boston Chapter discusses why “Old Grand-Dad Bonded Is My Favorite Cheap Bourbon” with Men's Journal "As many solid bourbons have been skyrocketing in price, this bottle has been steadfast in value. Old Grand-Dad Bonded is one of my favorite bargain bourbons for a variety of reasons besides its $25-per-liter price point at stores around me. My appreciation revolves around the name’s reference, how the brand was almost lost, and its flavorful high rye mash bill. The brand was created in 1882 by Raymond Hayden, named in tribute to his grandfather and distiller Basil Hayden Sr. Basil’s portrait still appears on every bottle of Old Grand-Dad (though it's a more serious sketch on today’s bottles rather than the more jovial one on bottles past). Despite various changes of packaging and distilling locations, the brand has stayed true to a high rye profile at 27 percent of the mash bill. The extra rye pays dividends in a spice complexity that includes white pepper and cinnamon notes. The brand changed hands through the years, including a Prohibition bypass with the American Medicinal Spirits Company that later led it to be produced by National Distillers. What Prohibition didn't kill, the disco drinks of the 1980s almost did, as bourbon sales were in major decline." Team USA joined the Global Finalist Teams from the United Kingdom and New Zealand for an experience of a lifetime in the Cardrona Valley. Finalists enjoyed helicopter tours, bungee jumping, fellowship, and delicious The Reid Vodka cocktails during their trip before competing as both individuals and teams in The Reid Vodka Global Cocktail Competition Final on the last day. Team USA member, Jennifer Yim says that the experience was, “nothing short of extraordinary. It was a life-changing journey that went beyond just showcasing cocktails – it was about connecting with incredible people from around the world who share the same passion for the craft. The level of talent and creativity I witnessed was inspiring, and it pushed me to challenge myself in ways I hadn’t before.” Ultimately, Team New Zealand won The Reid Cup and the award for Best Bartender overall went to Harry Findlay, from Londo in Christchurch. The caliber of cocktails presented throughout this global competition was incredibly high, demonstrating skill, passion, and a true love for The Reid Vodka. USBG NEWS: The United States Bartenders' Guild today announces that its membership has voted wine and spirits education specialist Elizabeth Pirnat to the organization’s National Board of Directors for the first time; Geoffrey Thompson for his first full term; and Joseph Fredrickson for a second term. The Board Members: Elizabeth Pirnat, DipWSET (Cleveland, OH): Pirnat is the Head Spirits Instructor for Napa Valley Wine Academy. She brings to the Board a decade of experience in the wine industry and has been a member of the Cleveland Chapter of the USBG since 2019. She has focused on wine and spirits education for the past nine years. Her passion is for working with students to deepen their knowledge and see education improve their sales and employment opportunities. Joseph Fredrickson (Cincinnati, OH): Fredrickson has been a USBG member since 2014, previously serving as a leader of the Cleveland chapter. His passion inside the hospitality industry is to be a positive influence to talented young industry professionals, teaching them habits that lead towards sustainable healthy lifestyles. Prior to joining the National Board, he served two terms as the chair of the National Council of Chapters. Geoffrey “Geo” Thompson (Boston, MA): Thompson joined the USBG as a member of the Boston chapter in 2015, serving as VP and then as President. His time serving on the board of a relatively small chapter provided him with a unique perspective on the greater organizational structure. He also served as vice-chair of the National Council of Chapters for two terms which allowed him to act as a non-voting member on the National Board. Additionally, he has been active on a number of committees and board-level task forces including MemCom, EdCom, Conference, and Bar Summit and, most recently, with the newly formed Advocacy committee. He originally joined the Board of Directors after being called into action in 2023 to fill a vacant director position. Each member will serve a three year term from 2025-2027.
