UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. During its 80-year existence, UNCF has raised more than $6 billion and helped more than 500,000 students not just attend college, but thrive, graduate and become leaders. To serve youth, the community and the nation, UNCF supports students’ education and development through scholarships and other programs, supports and strengthens its 37 member colleges and universities, and advocates for the importance of minority education and college readiness. While totaling only 3% of all colleges and universities, UNCF institutions and other historically Black colleges and universities are highly effective, awarding 15% of bachelor’s degrees, 5% of master’s degrees, 10% of doctoral degrees and 19% of all STEM degrees earned by Black students in higher education. UNCF administers more than 400 programs, including scholarship, internship and fellowship, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty development programs. Today, UNCF supports more than 50,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities across the country. Its logo features the UNCF torch of leadership in education and its widely recognized trademark, ?A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”? BREAKING RESEARCH: The "HBCU Effect" on student mental health is real! We are thrilled to announce the results of an unprecedented nationwide mental health research study in our new report "Flourishing: Bolstering the Mental Health of Students at HBCUs and PBIs"! Conducted in partnership with Healthy Minds Network and The Steve Fund, this research is grounded in surveys collected from 2,500 students across 18 HBCUs and PBIs that was compared with surveys conducted at dozens of non-HBCUs across the country. This research was designed to provide key insights on the state of mental health at HBCUs, fill critical gaps in mental health support, and create even stronger environments where all students can thrive. The findings demonstrate remarkable mental health outcomes for HBCU students, despite greater financial stressors and barriers to mental health services: ? HBCU students report "flourishing" mental health at significantly higher rates than their peers. ? HBCU students experience significantly lower rates of anxiety, substance use, and eating disorders ? HBCU students feel a stronger sense of belonging. ? HBCU students are willing to be more open about their emotions while on campus ? HBCU students are more likely to believe that their institutions prioritize mental well-being. We will host two information-packed webinars based on the report: ?? Flourishing Minds: Understanding the HBCU Mental Health Advantage - Explore the research methodology behind the report, key findings, and practical applications for institutions nationwide. (March 20, Noon EST) https://lnkd.in/eDz_yPWQ ?? Strength in Sisterhood: Black Women's Mental Health at HBCUs - A special Women's History Month session examining unique insights about Black women's mental health experiences and support systems (March 26, Noon EST) https://lnkd.in/e8TnUiMN To read the press release, download the report, and sign up for the webinars, click on the link below! https://lnkd.in/eN6Yk8AP #HBCUStrong #MentalHealthMatters #HigherEducation #UNCFResearch

UNCF joins the world in celebrating the life and legacy of classically trained concert pianist, Howard University Alumna, and five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Roberta Flack. Roberta Flack was more than a friend to UNCF—she was family. She believed, as we do, that education is the key to unlocking doors of opportunity, to shaping a future where every student has a fair shot at excellence and prosperity. In 2011, Flack joined Pharrell Williams to perform during the 40th annual UNCF gala honoring former UNCF CEO Vernon Jordan and UNCF’s iconic motto, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”? UNCF extends our deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and fans who mourn the passing of Roberta Flack. ??: https://lnkd.in/e7HbJdzm
