Celebrating Women’s Impact in Mine Action! This International Women’s Day, UNMAS South Sudan reaffirms its commitment to gender equality by recognizing the courage, resilience, and contributions of women in mine action. From deminers clearing explosive hazards to leaders driving change, these women are shaping a safer and more inclusive future. This year, we went beyond celebration - we accelerated. On March 7, 2025, UNMAS, as the lead of the Mine Action Area of Responsibility, convened mine action partners for a Stakeholder Dialogue on the establishment of the Women in Mine Action Network (WiMAN). This initiative, inspired by recommendations from female deminers themselves, aims to provide a platform for mentorship, advocacy, and peer-to-peer learning, ensuring that women in mine action have the support they need to thrive and lead. The Stakeholder Dialogue brought together key mine action stakeholders, including the National Mine Action Authority (NMAA), UNMAS and implementing partners, the Mine Advisory Group (MAG), Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and DanChurch Aid (DCA), and the UNMISS Gender Affairs Unit.? Remember Hanan ! Hanan, a survivor of an explosive ordnance incident, has been trained by #UNMAS as an Explosive Ordnance Risk Education facilitator. She initially joined the UNMAS team last year to conduct field activities. With funding from the @JapanGov, she was deployed to provide risk education sessions to communities in Rural Damascus, Syria. Today , UNMAS is re-engaging Hanan, supported by funding from #OCHA through the Syria Humanitarian Fund (SHF) and the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), to continue delivering EORE to affected populations. ? South Sudan Charts the Path to a Mine-Free Future! With landmines still posing a threat to lives and livelihoods, the National Mine Action Authority (NMAA) convened a National Stakeholder Dialogue in Juba, with support from UNMAS and the Implementation Support Unit (ISU) of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC). The event brought together government leaders and mine action organizations to strategise and develop a comprehensive work plan for South Sudan’s APMBC Article 5 extension request. The dialogue centred on the progress South Sudan has made since acceding to the APMBC in 2011; the challenges encountered, including insecurity, seasonal flooding, and reduced international funding; and strengthening partnerships between the Government, donors, UN agencies, and NGOs to accelerate humanitarian demining. "Clearing landmines is not just about fulfilling our international obligations - it is about protecting our people, restoring livelihoods, and enabling national development." A representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation emphasized. "Mine clearance is not merely a treaty obligation - it is a humanitarian necessity and a catalyst for sustainable development. Every mine cleared is a life saved, a future secured, and a step toward lasting peace." The Chairperson of NMAA reiterated. Mr. Zehrudin Sukanovic, the Chief of the UNMAS Mine Action Programme, urged participants to advocate for funding of mechanical assets-proven game-changers in clearing antipersonnel minefields underscoring their critical role in accelerating mine action efforts, emphasizing their impact in the Article 5 Extension request as a strategic solution to drive progress and save lives. The #UNMAS Syria risk education team conducted Explosive Ordnance Risk Education Focal Point training for 14 humanitarian workers from #ZOA, the international relief and recovery organization, in #Damascus. The training aimed to equip them with the knowledge and skills to conduct awareness sessions to colleagues deployed in the field. Such sessions provide humanitarian workers with lifesaving awareness. Raising awareness of the dangers of explosive hazards is an essential component of the humanitarian response to vulnerable communities affected by the conflict in #Syria. This week, #UNMAS Director Ilene Cohn participated in a demonstration of assets and equipment in support of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The demonstration covered improvised explosive device (IED) threat mitigation equipment, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) techniques and procedures and the strong collaboration between Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) EOD teams and UNMAS #ExplosiveDetectionDog teams. Mr.Joseph McCartan, UNMAS Chief of the UN Mine Action Programme in #Syria, congratulates the HALO Trust for their work in Mseibin,#Idlib Governorate. HALO successfully cleared the first anti-personnel minefield to international standards. The clearance operation resulted in the removal of 20 anti-personnel mines and 27 other items of unexploded ordnance. The land has been immediately repurposed for cultivation, and the rehabilitation of surrounding agricultural structures. ?
