Five years on from the start of the pandemic and the return to office vs. hybrid working debate is a hotter topic than ever!
I really enjoyed hosting a group of HR directors this morning where we explored the topic, what it means for businesses, for leaders and for HR teams implementing and managing the implications.
Here’s my top five insights:
?? We all know there are pros and cons. The evidence, for example, shows that some remote working doesn’t negatively impact productivity, but it does increase job satisfaction, engagement and opens up work opportunities, especially for certain demographics. But remote working can stifle innovation particularly across siloes. There’s also a ‘cost of coordination’ with what seems to be even more meetings than ever before. And meeting in person is important for building trusted relationships with colleagues.
?? Leaders must make data-driven decisions to determine the right policy for their organisation in line with their strategy and culture. They must go in with their eyes wide open to the trade-offs that will inevitably follow and need to be managed.
?? It can become an issue of fairness. This plays out in many ways, but an obvious one is that frontline employees don’t have a choice. Creating ways to bring fairness across the business is important if you want all employees to buy-in.
? Employees crave agency in their roles. RTO mandates and tracking risk imposing strict and controlling rules that chip away at that sense of autonomy and empowerment. Creating ‘freedom within the framework’ may be a middle ground that can work for some.
??♀? It’s not easy for middle managers who aren’t the decision-makers but are the ones that have to communicate and manage the change with their teams. Making sure they are equipped and empowered to do so is key.
Big thanks to Professor Thomas Roulet for returning to our United Minds Breakfast Club once again and adding his insights and the academic perspective. Great to see and meet lots of other faces – both familiar and new – to share similar challenges and exchange different experiences and learnings.
Also huge thanks to my fab colleagues at United Minds – in particular Kate McLean, Jasmine Voos and Kieran Colville – for making today’s event a success.
More to come from us on this topic. Looking forward to our next breakfast later in the Spring!
