Public school educators joined forces with political volunteers from other labor unions for a labor walk in eastern Queens on Saturday to garner support for the re-election of U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi and state Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky. Our members had a fun day speaking to fellow union members about Suozzi, Stavisky and other candidates on the Nov. 5 ballot who back our priorities in education and labor.

Yasmin Colon, the UFT’s conscientious election coordinator and assistant director for membership, has worked for the union for 26 years. She began part-time as a student, was hired as a receptionist and worked her way up the ranks over the years. Yasmin’s happiest memories are of working alongside Ray Frankel, a founding member who oversaw union elections for decades. "Our collaboration in the UFT elections has been a source of great pride, and I'm honored to continue her legacy with every election I run," she says. Yasmin always works hard to make union services and operations function as smoothly as possible. Her best advice for those considering a job with the UFT is to keep an open mind, be kind and get to know colleagues across departments.

What a day! The UFT was warmly welcomed by our union brothers and sisters in the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers on Saturday as we embarked on our first canvass day for the 2024 election. We knocked on doors, made new friends and did our part to get out the vote in this pivotal election. The UFT is planning multiple trips to Pennsylvania in support of pro-union candidates best aligned with our values, and we hope to engage many more members in the political process.

The UFT brought big numbers to NYC's annual Labor Parade on Saturday, September 7. Members and their families gathered on 46th Street before marching up 5th Avenue to Central Park in solidarity with all our labor allies. Early rain gave way to afternoon sunshine as the UFT did its part to show that New York City is a union town.

Talk about a milestone! Russell Taylor recently celebrated 35 years with the UFT. As the 8th floor coordinator at our Queens borough office, Russell is known for consistently going above and beyond expectations. Anyone who has worked with him for an on-site event has sung his praises, singling out how nice and helpful he is. His colleagues can be confident that Russell will take care of everything without hesitation, and he is skilled at bringing projects to fruition and completing tasks before even being asked. He has devoted 35 years of his life to the UFT and the union is fortunate to have him.

Rosita Burgos-Bueno, who recently celebrated her 25th UFT work anniversary, got her start working with the UFT Teacher Center, where she assisted in providing educators with professional development. Since then, she has held a number of responsibilities, including managing the union’s Teacher Union Day awards ceremony and annual Spring Education Conference. She finds it especially meaningful to see “teachers and school-based staff being rewarded for their hard work and dedication.” Rosita considers being promoted to serve as UFT President Michael Mulgrew’s executive assistant as a “moment that changed my life.” She adds: “working at this capacity with the entire executive floor has strengthened the love for the work that I do. I can go on and on about my journey at the UFT, but I will simply say that all the long hours and hard work have been worth it.” Color us delighted to have such a committed professional in Rosita!
