Closing Scotland’s last oil refinery will be an economic and environmental failure ?? The government must act to save jobs at Grangemouth ?? Yesterday’s Project Willow report confirms Petroineos Trading Limited is shutting Grangemouth refinery, and there is still no real plan for workers or Scotland’s economy. Despite ￡1.5 million of taxpayer funding, the company and government have failed to put forward real solutions to sustain jobs and the economy. It doesn’t have to be this way. The UK and Scottish governments can change course: ? Independent review of Grangemouth’s assets to secure a just transition. ? Immediate investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to protect jobs. ? Fast-tracking viable projects before the site closes, not years later. The alternative? Job losses and increased petroleum imports from overseas with no long-term benefit to the economy OR environment. It's not to late to make better choices. We should remember that around 38% of people on benefits are in work. More of a focus on making work pay is needed.
