“You’ll never write a coloring book in this town!” is something I wish I’d heard to make this moment even sweeter. On sale today is an 80-page coloring book I wrote based on Mo Willems' character The Pigeon. It was such a joy to work w/ the wonderful folks at Union Square & Co. Publishing, the very talented Scott Sosebee (and team) and Mo. Of course. I hope the kids in your life like it! https://lnkd.in/gMGKNt_2

My mom, a school librarian, always brought home the most interesting books for us to look at as kids. One of them was "CDC?". The cover features a drawing of a father pointing out to the sea, asking his son "C D C ?" ("See the sea?"). And the whole book is like that—little word puzzles where you say the letters out loud to decipher the cartoon caption. Not too long ago, I was reading CDC to my kids, and they were enjoying it just as much as I had about 30 years earlier. After we put the book down, a new puzzle popped into my head—one that wasn't in CDC. I tried to get to sleep, but then I thought of another one. And another one. I grabbed my phone and started jotting them down. That's how it started. A week or two later, I had hundreds. To make a long story slightly shorter, my new book of gramograms (the technical name for these puzzles) will publish in November. I created AB@C ("A bee at sea") in partnership with award-winning New Yorker cartoonist Dan Misdea. It builds on the legacy of William Steig (also a famed New Yorker cartoonist and the author of Shrek!). Steig wrote his gramogram books, CDB and CDC, in the 60s and 80s, and could not have foreseen the upheaval of written language caused by texting ("R U OK?") and the internet (these days, we all know how to say "@"). Dan and I, along with our publishers at Union Square & Co., felt it was time for a new generation of gramograms. AB@C is both an homage to Steig's groundbreaking work and a leap forward, with all-new gramograms that feature previously unused symbols, words, and settings. We had so much fun creating the book, and we're excited to see some early enthusiasm from fellow word nerds and cartoonists: "I loved?CDB?as a kid. Dan Misdea and Rob Meyerson match Steig's wit with each cartoon. It's endless fun deciphering each sentence and laughing out loud. I could read a million more, so get to it, Dan and Rob."?— Ellis Rosen,?New Yorker?cartoonist?and author of?Dink! ? "A satisfying scratch to the brains of those who revel at the ikigai of punnery, word games, grammar, typography, and illustration. ... Intellectually stimulating and entertaining—yet bite-sized—the gramograms within these pages will appeal to fans of Gary Larson, Norton Juster, and Bob Eckstein." —Jess Zafarris, author of?Once Upon a Word?and?Words from Hell To check out AB@C, pre-order now on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3zkSzye. The Royal Ballet School alum turned English teacher Lucy Ashe draws from both aspects of herself in her writing. Her love for ballet, as well as her command of the English language, shine in her latest novel, “The Sleeping Beauties” (Union Square & Co.). Set for a September 10 release in the U.S., “The Sleeping Beauties” follows ballet dancer Briar Woods as she grapples with her own past and the aftereffects of living through World War II. The novel weaves the gothic elements of the classic “Sleeping Beauty” story with rich historical details about the former Sadler’s Wells Ballet Company (now The Royal Ballet and Opera). Pointe spoke with Ashe about her robust research process, her past as a dancer, and how writing helps her keep ballet close. Today is the day! My first book, "Black in Fashion: 100 Years of Style, Influence & Culture," that I'm honored to have worked on alongside Tonya Blazio-Licorish for WWD while I was there, is out today. To have learned and helped share these stories is one of the professional experiences I'm most proud of. Thank you to all who made this happen: Tonya for unearthing so many stories to be told from the Fairchild Archive and without whom this book wouldn't have been possible, to WWD for making the space for it, to Union Square & Co. for publishing it and, most importantly, to the talented and beautiful individuals who shared their stories. May these stories and images live on as a critical component in the history of fashion. More here!
