?? The holiday season can be challenging for children with autism or sensory sensitivities. Dr. Breanne Hartley, Chief Clinical Officer at UNIFI Autism Care, shares some practical tips to help make your holiday gatherings more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone: 1. Prepare with social stories or visual schedules: Use tools like social stories or visual schedules to show your child how the day will unfold. This preparation helps set expectations and reduce anxiety. 2. Set up a quiet area for sensory breaks: Create a designated space where your child can decompress if the festivities become overwhelming. Having a calm spot available can make a big difference in helping them feel comfortable. 3. Promote inclusion and understanding: Educate other children about the importance of inclusion by explaining that everyone experiences things in their own way. Demonstrate kindness, patience and inclusivity—leading by example encourages others to follow suit. At UNIFI, we’re committed to creating welcoming and supportive environments for all children and families. With these tips, you can help make this Thanksgiving a time for connection and joy for everyone. Learn more about our mission at unifiautismcare.com.
