Two-year-old Amir is in a shelter in Beirut, Lebanon, after being displaced by the ongoing, intense conflict. UNICEF and partners are supporting children like Amir with psychosocial activities to help improve their mental health. What they really need is peace and a ceasefire.

My statement on #COP29 issued in New York yesterday. ? “As COP29 enters the final hours of negotiations, UNICEF is deeply concerned that current proposals under consideration by Ministers do not go far enough to protect children. We strongly urge Parties to find consensus behind measures that will prioritise children and their futures.? ? “As Ministers discuss outcomes, climate shocks are damaging children’s health and development, safety, and access to education, safe water and adequate nutrition?across the globe. Governments cannot go back on their commitments. The global reliance on fossil fuels must end, and with it the toxic air that impairs children's lungs and stunts their development. Climate finance must be increased, and it must be urgently directed to measures that protect children from the devastating impacts of climate change.? ? “The world’s children are looking to COP29 for solutions. They are demanding bold and urgent climate action. The future of the world's 2.4 billion children is at stake.”

“Young people have such powerful opinions as you see the world in a different way. Don’t ever feel that your voice isn't being heard, because it is. Your voice matters and it can make a difference.” This #WorldChildrensDay, our Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham met a group of unstoppable Girl Scouts making a difference—supporting their communities, standing up for every child, and building a safer, healthier world. Let’s listen to the future and take action together. ??

This is one of my favorite moments from #COP29 last week where I met 14-year-old Zunaira, UNICEF Pakistan's climate change champion from Hub, Balochistan, representing the voices of millions of children like her, with so much confidence and determination. Children’s rights and lives are at a crossroads today. They face rapid, continued change that throws into question the very basics of what childhood will be like in the future. And right now, conflicts, climate change and crises including, gross violations of rights undercut one of the most basic tenets of humanity – that children have a right to care and protection no matter the circumstance. This #WorldChildrensDay, UNICEF's flagship publication, 'The State of the World’s Children 2024: The Future of Childhood in a Changing World' is calling on world leaders to take action: mitigate and adapt to climate change; anticipate and plan for population shifts; and ensure good governance and enforcement around disruptive technologies. And to listen to children and young people. They have a right to be heard, for their ideas to be taken seriously, and to be included in decisions that will impact their future. As climate-related hazards intensify, mounting evidence points to an increase in: ?? Adverse birth outcomes ?? Malnutrition ?? Diseases ?? Injuries ?? Mental health problems ?? Learning loss Enough is enough. To protect children, we need leaders to keep children at the centre of climate finance. #ClimateAction #COP29
