Most people who know me know that I left a piece of my heart in East Asia. I spent years in the region, and witnessed firsthand the relentless challenges children face, but also the incredible, unwavering spirit of those who refuse to look away, colleagues and partners alike. Across the world, from Myanmar to so many other countries, from Asia to America, our partners and individual supporters refuse to let children face crises alone. And I’m unbelievably proud and honoured to have met so many of these supporters. Supporting UNICEF’s work, whether as a donor, a partner, or an advocate is contagious. The moment you step up, you spark something in others. It’s how movements can be built. How lives can be changed. And right now we need our partners - and new ones - more than ever before. This is not just another moment. It’s THE moment. As some governments, under pressure, scale back funding and work to balance their books on the backs of the world’s poorest, most marginalised and most at risk, this is - sadly and shockingly - a moment in history. Childhood overweight and obesity are growing faster in East Asia and the Pacific than anywhere else in the world. The region is home to the highest number of children with obesity worldwide. Since 2019, Novo Nordisk and UNICEF have been working together to prevent childhood overweight and obesity globally by improving food systems – through policies, programmes, and everyday practices, so that children can eat well and stay physically active.? ?? 1 in 4 children in Southeast Asia is overweight. At the same time, supermarket density has grown 52.5% in 15 years—faster than anywhere in the world. As chain retailers expand, fresh, affordable food is disappearing for lower-income communities. Ultra-processed foods—cheap, convenient, and aggressively marketed—are shaping diets from an early age. The food system needs to be fixed and here are some key solutions: ? Taxes on unhealthy foods to discourage excessive consumption.? ? Stricter labelling laws so consumers can make informed choices.? ? Limits on children’s exposure to unhealthy food marketing.? ? Restrictions on in-store promotions of ultra-processed products.?? The amendment of Thailand’s Civil and Commercial Code to ban all forms of violence, corporal punishment, and psychological discipline against children is a critical step forward for every child in Thailand. UNICEF Thailand applauds this important legislative reform and the government’s commitment to protecting children’s rights. While the prevalence of violent discipline at home has declined—from 75% in 2015 to 54% in 2022—no child should ever be subjected to violence. This amendment aligns with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and makes Thailand the second country in ASEAN to legally ban violent discipline in all settings, including homes, schools, care institutions, and daycare centres.
