Notice anything different in Dimond? Students in Professor Sachiko Akiyama's ARTS 567 Introductory Sculpture class used reference photos to create large-scale masks of animals out of cardboard, glue and paint. After wearing their masks in a parade around campus, students' creations were displayed in Dimond Library. Thank you Professor Akiyama and your students for sharing your beautiful art with us! Animals and artists (in order of appearance): Owl Skull - Amy Sinbaldi Zebra - Charlotte Langhorne Mountain Gorilla - Hunter Gutterman Emerald Tree Boa - Ray DeVita Seahorse - Ella Bender Horse - Calli Ogurkis

Two generations of the Irwin family, Lee and Doris Irwin and their son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Marjorie Irwin generously gave to the library making it possible to purchase a Zeutschel archival scanner with ScannX software. This modernized system allows the library to offer new services for document delivery such as: - Digital Translation of text into one of 120+ selectable languages - Archival quality reproductions - Handwriting Recognition converting handwritten documents into .Docx files - Converting text documents into MP3 audio files Thank you to the Irwins for making the Library more resourceful! And thank you to our Library Resource Sharing Manager, Christine Powers, and the ILL team for their scanner demonstration!

Last week, we welcomed three Ukrainian folk artists for a Zoom Q&A on their art featured in Dimond Library. Tetyana Konoval, Rustem Skybin, and Hanna Oliynyk spoke of the importance of creation during war. Here are some of their words translated from Ukrainian to English by Ukrainian art curator and ethnographer Sophia Sushailo who moderated the discussion. The Zoom featured an audience of UNH community members as well as an international audience online with folks joining in from several different countries across several different times zones. Attendees commented on their inspiration from the artists to continue doing what they love during tumultuous times, as well as Sophia's skills in translating the artist's answers with accuracy and passion. You can view art by Tetyana, Rustem, and Hanna at Dimond Library this semester in our exhibit "Ukrainian Folk Art Traditions: Preserving Cultural Identity." The UNH Library is grateful to the artists as well as Sophia Sushailo and Maxime Guinel de France for sharing their culture with our community. And mark your calendars for November 9th when Christina Vogel, a first-generation American of Ukrainian descent who has been teaching classes on Ukrainian culture, history, and heritage in New England since 2014, will lead a pysanky workshop! Registration details to come!
