Last week, we welcomed three Ukrainian folk artists for a Zoom Q&A on their art featured in Dimond Library. Tetyana Konoval, Rustem Skybin, and Hanna Oliynyk spoke of the importance of creation during war. Here are some of their words translated from Ukrainian to English by Ukrainian art curator and ethnographer Sophia Sushailo who moderated the discussion.
The Zoom featured an audience of UNH community members as well as an international audience online with folks joining in from several different countries across several different times zones. Attendees commented on their inspiration from the artists to continue doing what they love during tumultuous times, as well as Sophia's skills in translating the artist's answers with accuracy and passion.
You can view art by Tetyana, Rustem, and Hanna at Dimond Library this semester in our exhibit "Ukrainian Folk Art Traditions: Preserving Cultural Identity." The UNH Library is grateful to the artists as well as Sophia Sushailo and Maxime Guinel de France for sharing their culture with our community.
And mark your calendars for November 9th when Christina Vogel, a first-generation American of Ukrainian descent who has been teaching classes on Ukrainian culture, history, and heritage in New England since 2014, will lead a pysanky workshop! Registration details to come!
