The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation has kicked off a week-long Technical Assistance Mission in Cairo, involving our HQ, ASRO-MENARO, and Egypt Country Offices. Today, we had the opportunity to meet with the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (#NCCM), the National Council for Women (#NCW), and the Medical Syndicate of Egypt. We engaged in meaningful discussions about collaborative strategies to end FGM by 2030. Inspired by #EndFGM training I received a few weeks ago courtesy of Egerton University Nursing Department in association with the Africa Coordinating Centre for Abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation (ACCAF), I decided to shed more light on the menace that is Female Genital Mutilation #FGM. Female genital mutilation is a violation of human rights that inflicts deep and lifelong physical, emotional, and psychological scars on girls and women. This harmful practice affects more than 230 million girls and women today. An estimated 27 million more girls could endure this violation of their rights and dignity by 2030 if we do not take action now. Today, as we commemorate International Zero Tolerance Day 2025 #STEPPINGUPTHEPACESTRENGTHENINGALLIANCESANDBUILDINGMOVEMENTSTOENDFGM the Youth Anti-FGM Network Kenya (YANK) is launching its Meru County chapter, marking a significant milestone in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other harmful practices. With this launch, YANK has now established 16 county chapters out of the 22 FGM hotspot counties in Kenya. Meru County, with an FGM prevalence of 19%—higher than the national average of 15%—remains a critical area for intervention. Beyond FGM, Meru also faces high rates of teenage pregnancy and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), making this chapter’s work even more crucial in driving meaningful change for young people.
