What are early warning systems - and why do they matter for climate action? Extreme weather is threatening lives and livelihoods. According to World Meteorological Organization climate-related disasters increased 5x between 1970 and 2019. While economic losses increased by a factor of 7. Early warning systems can reduce damage by up to 30% by alerting communities in time. Our latest explainer dives into how early warning systems leverage climate data from advanced forecasting to multi-channel communications — to empower communities and governments to act decisively against extreme events. Tackling the climate crisis requires all countries to make bold pledges under the Paris Agreement, or NDCs, to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming and strengthen adaptation to its impacts. At UNDP Climate, our commitment is to ensure that any country wishing to increase the ambition of their national climate pledge is able to do so. UNDP is now scaling up its support for countries to turn their NDC targets into concrete action – while continuing to push for greater ambition. Leveraging the NDCs as an umbrella, UNDP is bringing together its extensive infrastructure, networks and breadth of substantive offers to provide comprehensive support on NDC implementation. This effort is underpinned by strong support to green COVID-19 recovery measures, as well as leveraging UNDP's strength through measures that align UNDP’s broader portfolio with the Paris Agreement and NDCs.

The IPCC has officially opened its 62nd Session in Hangzhou, China. Find out why this is important ?? The Panel is meeting to agree on the outlines of the key contributions to the Seventh Assessment Report, as well as the Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage. During the week, delegates representing the Panel’s 195 member governments will also consider the respective timelines and budgets for these reports. ? What is the IPCC? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the UN body for assessing #ClimateScience. Thousands of scientists and experts worldwide volunteer as IPCC authors, reviewing extensive research to summarize what we know about climate change — its causes, impacts, risks, and solutions. IPCC assessments provide governments, at all levels, with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies. ? What is the Seventh Assessment Report? IPCC Assessment Reports are published every 5 to 7 years and assess the latest available scientific information on #ClimateChange. The #IPCC is currently in its seventh assessment cycle, which formally began in July 2023 with the elections of the new?IPCC and Task Force Bureaus. IPCC’s latest report, the?Sixth Assessment Report, was completed in March 2023 with the release of its Synthesis Report, which provided direct scientific input to the First #GlobalStocktake process at #COP28 in Dubai. ??
