Today we showcased for our partners in Brussels UNDP Accelerator Labs and their role in promoting meaningful citizen participation in public life. With 90 Lab teams covering 115 countries, the network taps into local innovations to create actionable insights and reimagine #sustainabledevelopment for the 21st century. Over the past five years, the Accelerator Labs have carried out a significant amount of work aimed at promoting meaningful civic engagement – from reimagining indigenous peoples’ consultation processes in #Mexico to supporting dialogue on controversial energy transition issues in #SouthAfrica, among many others. Extreme weather events disrupt access to fresh drinking water, reliable irrigation, and fishing in Kenya’s Tana River County. The UNDP Accelerator Labs in Kenya is developing a collaborative mapping platform that combines data on water infrastructure in Tana River County. This water resource mapping can support communities and vulnerable populations in adapting to water scarcity. The UNDP Accelerator Labs in Zimbabwe and Pegara, a Japanese AI start-up, partnered to tackle the quelea bird menace threatening small grain crops. With local net catchers, AI, and data collection, they are improving accuracy in detecting quelea swarms and enhancing the netting system to help protect food security and boost local economies. A UNDP Accelerator Labs’ prototype evolves into tackling digital transformation for Uganda. Our UNDP Uganda #AccLab worked with Jumia Uganda & the government to connect informal vendors with consumers through an e-commerce platform. They now have more than 4,000 market vendors on the platform and is expanding to 10 more markets & cities.
