Did you know that nearly 150,000 young people (ages 16-19) in our state are neither in school nor working? This group is also known as “Opportunity Youth.” Opportunity youth are twice as likely to live in poverty and less likely to be employed, own a home, or report good health when they reach their thirties. ?? Between 2010 and 2023, the number of jobs have surged in our region, with Fort Bend County leading the way with 88% growth, followed by Montgomery County at 77%, and Harris County at 21%. Houston has a strong economy and is a region of opportunity, yet 1 in 5 children in the Houston three-county region lives in poverty—a cycle that often continues into adulthood. For our region to continue growing, opportunities must be accessible to all. Increasing economic mobility allows everyone to reach their full potential and builds the skilled workforce critical to Houston’s future. One key indicator to assess economic mobility is absolute income mobility, the fraction of children who earn more than their parents while adjusting for inflation.
