Three months ago, Nev Schulman had a bike accident that left him with a broken neck. That was a problem.
Not only because it was a scary injury that disrupted his life, but because someone was counting on him.
Nev is registered as a blind runner guide with the Achilles International Foundation to support athletes with disabilities, and he made a commitment to run with friend Francesco Magisano in the New York City Marathon.
In a profile for People Magazine, Nev said “About two weeks after the accident, he [Francesco] texted me, ‘How are you feeling?’ I said, ‘I'm feeling terrible, and you should probably look for a new guide.’” “He said, ‘Nev, I'm not going to find a new guide. Take your time, get better. And I don't care how fast or slow we go, I really want you to be my guide.’”
“And honestly, this was a very inspiring part of my recovery,” Nev recalls.
That moment shifted Schulman’s perspective on the trajectory of his injury and motivated him to get back on his feet.
Through a tough recovery and a lot of hard work, Nev and Francesco completed the New York Marathon this past weekend, putting up one of their best race times. Congratulations, Nev, on this incredible achievement. Your journey is an inspiration to us all.
