Our California Youth Climate Policy (CYCP) fellowship program would not be possible without the dedication and unwavering support of our mentors. In monthly meetings with youth leaders, they support coalition and campaign strategy, help refine policy proposals, and cheerlead as our youth leaders prepare to pass ambitious climate policies in their school districts! Check out the stories of two of our awesome mentors Eric Havel and @Jamie Blatter on why they do what they do.

?? Ever wondered whether #ElectricSchoolBus batteries can help power schools in the event of a grid outage or other emergency? ?? Check out this awesome pilot happening in Hood River County School District, where a solar and EV battery microgrid, along with building controls and bi-directional vehicle chargers can successfully power a middle school during outages. ?? Awesome work, RMI! https://lnkd.in/gDqqw9JS

This week, Tucson Unified School District (TUSD1.org) passed one of the most ambitious climate action policies in the nation - driven by bold student leadership and intergenerational collaboration. “The plan was researched and drafted by the AZ Youth Climate Coalition (AZYCC), a youth-led organization that fights for climate action and climate justice across the state. Members of that group, ranging in age from 13 to 20 years old, have been working on the TUSD climate plan for the past year and a half.“ Further proof of the power of youth voices to shape a healthy, sustainable, climate-resilient future.?Congratulations to TUSD, the Arizona Youth Climate Coalition, and everyone who supported this effort. Well done, Ojas Sanghi and collaborators. Here's to more districts following this lead!

"I was amazed that this small, cash-strapped district in south-central Pennsylvania wasn’t just using #solar energy to reduce its electricity bills — it also was harnessing this clean resource to educate and train young minds for a #cleanenergy future." Check out this great reporting from Amena H. Saiyid about how #SchoolSolar is so much more than solar panels on schools. https://lnkd.in/gzVW2Xvs

“The significant difference it will make in energy costs and the comfort it will provide for students and teachers is truly remarkable.” @Jeffrey Bryant, Greenbrier County Schools Superintendent Last week, GREENBRIER COUNTY SCHOOLS unveiled what is now the largest school solar array in #WestVirginia. The solar panel installation was combined with a #GroundSourceHeatPump HVAC system, other HVAC upgrades, and LED lighting upgrades, all developed in partnership with CMTA, Inc. The project is anticipated to bring $2M in federal reimbursements through the #InflationReductionAct to Greenbrier. Student Elijah McDaniel added: “The sun has an endless amount of energy and is renewable, where fossil fuels are not. [This project] lowers the electricity bill, which can be used for new computers, desks, and higher teacher pay. In the future, the solar array will pay for itself.” See the full ribbon cutting ceremony here: https://lnkd.in/g9iu869x
