Today, we released a new report with EdTrust covering the impacts of the recent wildfire-related school closures on students across Southern California. As communities begin to heal, the effects on students continue to be deeply felt. Weather-related school closures can cost more than a few days off school—from academic setbacks, loss of school-base supports or resources, and social-emotional challenges. In January alone, over 1,000 California schools closed, affecting more than 725,000 students, many from vulnerable communities such as multilingual learners (40%) and students with disabilities (10%). For these students, the closures have worsened existing inequities in their education, well-being, and more. With extreme weather events increasing in California and nationwide, state and local leaders must act now to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure and better support schools to protect students. Their futures depend on it. Download and share the report: https://lnkd.in/gunsvkB6 #WildfireImpact #EducationalEquity

Yesterday, EdSource featured an op-ed by Undaunted’s co-founder Jonathan Klein and Andra Yeghoian of Ten Strands calling upon California leaders to take swift, targeted action to advance climate-resilient schools and protect California’s school children from extreme weather risks. "A previous generation of state leaders made sure schools could keep our children safe in an earthquake — it’s time to do the same for the threats posed by extreme heat and weather." Read the op-ed and help us spread the word — our students and schools can't afford to wait. https://lnkd.in/gWJKZRqS

Thanks to everyone who came to our session earlier this week at the Green Schools Conference #GSC25, where we explored how schools can access energy tax credits and financing opportunities to modernize infrastructure, reduce operating costs, and build resilience. Session Highlights: ??Alyssa Curran (World Resources Institute) moderated this fantastic panel and shared funding resources and financing opportunities for electric school buses. ??Sara Ross (UndauntedK12) presented on the federal energy tax credits available to help improve school facilities. ??Karly Pulido (Miami-Dade County Public Schools) shared insights on the process and key lessons learned as her district utilized federal grants and energy tax credits to make improvements to facilities and transportation. ??Clark Seipt (Loudoun County Public Schools) shared how her district leveraged an Energy Savings Performance Contract to achieve ambitious sustainability goals with aging infrastructure and a limited budget. We appreciate those who joined us, and a special thank you to Green Schools National Network and Center for Green Schools for hosting! Missed the session?
