    Chemical Engineering Master’s Student

Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to attend SWE24, with this year’s theme, Together We Rise. The experience was nothing short of inspiring! For me, the highlight was connecting with professionals from a diverse range of careers and hearing their unique stories. As a woman in engineering, it’s always been so important to learn from those who have walked the path before me—women who have faced similar challenges and triumphs. This year’s theme truly resonated with me, as I had the privilege of living it out, both in the insightful sessions and through conversations with students from different schools. A huge thank you to the UND Society of Women Engineers and UND Department of Chemical Engineering for making this experience possible! I’m so grateful for the chance to grow, learn, and rise together with such a passionate community of women in engineering.

Who knew so many introverts would be at an engineering conference? ?? I presented a session on “Negotiation for Introverts” at the Society of Women Engineers #WE24 National Conference this past weekend. There’s no feeling quite like being surrounded by 20,000 (!) other driven, talented women engineers, and I was grateful to get to share my knowledge and experiences with part of this community who I have also learned so much from. Special shoutout to Professor Danielle Hansen, MBA, LSSBB, CPSM from the University of St. Thomas - Opus College of Business MBA Program – this presentation wouldn’t have been possible without the skills and perspectives I learned from your negotiation course!

We 24!!! l attended a range of sessions that offered fresh perspectives, practical strategies, and innovative ideas. Along with a chance to explore Chicago, I got to attend the largest career fair in the world with unparalleled networking opportunities. I'm leaving feeling energized and eager to implement what l've learned, while continuing to support one another in our engineering paths. Excited to continue to nurture these connections and cross paths once again. Forever grateful for the UND Society of Women Engineers chapter and the national community I find at the Society of Women Engineers National Conference every year. I'm excited to carry this energy forward, continuing to foster our community of engineering women. Here's to our collective journey! #We24 #SWE #FutureEngineers #UND

The SWE Early Career Professionals Affinity Group cordially invites you to our virtual event, "Professional Development Series" on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. The Professional Development Series is a monthly event with presentations by fellow ECP AG member volunteers. This month’s session will have two presentations: “Confessions of a Serial Job Hopper” by Alyssa Acosta, EIT and “I’m Late- Now What?” by Bridget Heiland. "I'm Late- Now What?" A presentation that tackles the challenges of managing time in a fast-paced workplace. Whether you've missed a project deadline, are running late to a meeting, need to ask for an extension, or find yourself stuck in traffic, this presentation provides practical strategies to help you navigate these situations with confidence. Both students and professionals are encouraged to attend. Alyssa Acosta graduated from Texas Tech University in 2020 with her bachelor's and master’s degrees in environmental engineering. After graduating she worked for ExxonMobil at their Joliet Refinery in Illinois as an environmental air advisor for 2 years. She then made the switch from the oil and gas industry to the water treatment scene by working for Garver at their College Station Water Design Center for a year before accepting a job with Burns and McDonnell. She is now a staff environmental engineer working in industrial wastewater treatment at the Houston office. Alyssa currently serves as the Co-lead for the Early Career Professionals AG and as the Chair-Elect for the Affinity Group Committee. She is also a 4-time speaker at the SWE national conference. Bridget Heiland graduated from the University of North Dakota in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. After graduation, she worked for a civil engineering company for about two years, performing surveying operations to establish building locations, site layouts, and elevations to guide ongoing construction. In 2022, she transitioned to 4EA Building Science, where she is currently employed as a Building Science Consultant. In this role, she engages in collaborative design efforts alongside architects, engineers, landscape architects, and contractors. Bridget conducts site visits in the greater Seattle area, overseeing and supporting construction crews, reviewing submittals and RFIs, and performing on-site testing. She also serves as a General Leadership Team Member for the Early Career Professionals AG and is the Educator Engagement Lead for the Pre-College Engagement and Support Committee.

Student at the University of North Dakota

In 1974, the UND Society of Women Engineers student section was chartered. For half a century afterwards, we have been empowering women in engineering, breaking barriers, and creating a close-knit community of support. Last weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to host the UND SWE 50th Anniversary. We had the opportunity to host tours of UND College of Engineering & Mines, tours of University of North Dakota's campus and new buildings, a float in the Potato Bowl Parade and the 50 Years of Women in Engineering Celebratory Banquet. But more importantly, I had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet and learn from SWE alumni. And what an incredible group they are!! It was so incredible to meet everyone and hear their stories and memories. It was so amazing to how many lives have been touched . This has been the most rewarding SWE experience yet! I can't wait to celebrate 60 years! ?? A huge thank you to all of my SWE officers, Ashlyn Veitz, Isabella Plagens, Brianna Geigle, and Kirklan Grenier! Without them, this celebration couldn't have happened. Another huge thank you to our faculty advisor and SWE counselor Bethany Klemetsrud and Samantha J. Krostue! This celebration couldn't have happened without their help as well. Society of Women Engineers UND Alumni Association & Foundation #UNDproud #WomeninEngineering
