At University of North Dakota and UND College of Engineering & Mines, Michelle Di Cicco and Paige Jones are proving that elite athletics and UND Biomedical Engineering Program can go hand in hand. ?? Michelle, a figure skater for Argentina, recently competed at the FISU World University Games—just months after recovering from major back surgery. ? Paige, a U.S. Ski Team member, is competing on the FIS World Cup circuit, aiming for Team USA at the 2026 Olympics. Both credit UND’s flexible BME program for helping them balance their demanding training schedules with academics. ?? "UND’s online program has been my saving grace," says Michelle. ?? "The department was excited to have me," adds Paige. Join us in celebrating their dedication in both Engineering and sport! https://lnkd.in/dZdYYPVi #UNDproud #BiomedicalEngineering #AthletesInSTEM #WomenInSTEM #UND #STEM #undbme #undproud

Honored to Represent MindMend Biotech at the InternGF Launch Event! I had the privilege of attending the InternGF Launch Event, where I joined an inspiring panel discussion alongside Kiley House, our Senior Lead Intern at MindMend Biotech. It was incredible to share insights about how internships shape the future of innovation and provide students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge fields like biomedical engineering and neurotechnology. At MindMend Biotech, we believe in investing in the next generation of talent, and it was great to see so many passionate individuals eager to learn and grow. Thank you to the InternGF team for putting together such a fantastic event! Looking forward to continuing to support and mentor emerging professionals in STEM and entrepreneurship. #InternGF #MindMendBiotech #STEMInternships #Innovation #FutureLeaders

It was such a fun couple of days at KNC25 connecting with fellow engineering educators in Austin! Highlights included presenting with Enrique Alvarez, Ryan Striker, and Daniel Ewert about the Innovation-Based Learning Framework, getting a robot-generated portrait, and spending time with Iron Range Engineering and College of Science, Engineering & Technology- Minnesota State Mankato colleagues!

As we wrap up the 2025 KEEN National Conference, one thing is crystal clear: engineering education is all about?impact! ?? Our BME faculty team had the pleasure of presenting a workshop on Innovation-Based Learning (IBL), showcasing our framework that empowers students to think entrepreneurially and innovate. Through their IBL projects, our students are not just learning—they’re creating real-world solutions with a ripple effect that benefits society. Here’s to making a difference in engineering education and beyond! #EngineeringImpact #IBL #KEEN2025 #undbme

Congratulations to Paige Jones, Rachel Francis, Daniel Voxland, and Gabe Hanson for their outstanding work on an incredible research project in partnership with the USA Luge Team! This UND Biomedical Engineering student team is analyzing inertial forces experienced by luge athletes to improve brain health and safety. Their efforts took them all the way to Lake Placid, NY, where they collected data directly from Olympic athletes during practice runs. The project was initiated by Paige Jones, an undergraduate student and member of the U.S. Ski Jumping Team, showcasing how innovation-based learning (IBL) empowers students to tackle real-world challenges. The team’s collaboration, guided by professors Ryan Striker and Enrique Alvarez Vazquez, demonstrates the power of experiential, interdisciplinary education at UND. Their work highlights how student-driven research can make a global impact. We can’t wait to see their findings shared in academic journals and conferences. Kudos to the team for embodying the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of University of North Dakota! It has been fun to watch my project become more and more real these past months. Huge thank you to Christy K. Sheehy-Bensinger, PhD and C. Light Technologies, Inc. for their support and equipment.
Aside from balancing mental & physical fitness, one of the biggest factors influencing sports performance is vision. Luge athletes travel at extremely high velocities, racing at speeds up to 75-90 mph, all while experiencing G forces (up to 5g!) as they steer down the track. Our co-founder Dr. Christy K. Sheehy-Bensinger, PhD recently brought our #Retitrack to the Olympic Sports Complex in Lake Placid, NY, to study the impacts of fixational eye motion on luge athletes. We partnered with biomedical engineering students from the University of North Dakota and Professor Ryan Striker on a research study seeking to understand how fixational eye motion and balance are impacted in luge athletes. To do this, we measured their fixational eye motion before and after their runs over the course of multiple days of training. It’s not often we mean an event is literally cool, but it’s not often you get to combine eye motion and Olympic sports ?? Thanks to the support of University of North Dakota professor Enrique Alvarez and students Paige Jones, Gabe Hanson, Rachel Francis, and Daniel Voxland! #eyemotion #optometry #sportsvision #athletes #ISVA
