A world-class leader in applied marine science: biotech, drug discovery, aquaculture, coastal resiliency & monitoring.
关于我们
The mission of CMS is to support and promote coastal and marine science at UNCW through research, teaching, outreach and service. CMS covers a broad range of coastal and marine issues with an emphasis on the physical, chemical and life sciences, as well as aquaculture and applied research. As UNCW is the state’s coastal university, we serve as stewards of coastal sustainability, aquaculture and living resources that make the Cape Fear region like no other. CMS represents over 100 researchers from across the University and serves an important role in connecting the needs of communities in the region, as well as national and global needs, with research, teaching and service. CMS has many moving parts from the shellfish hatchery, to working offshore on the R/V Cape Fear, to assessing coastal hazards and opportunities. As you will see in this video one of the new coastal programs at UNCW epitomizes the special attention to our environment and coastal living that makes the university so special to us all. Marine and coastal science at UNCW spans more than 50 years and integrates all of UNCW’s colleges and schools.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington Marine Mammal Stranding Program actively participated in this Manatee rescue in the Tar River with Clearwater Marine Aquarium, along with Sea World Orlando and a host of other colleagues! #soartogether #manateeawareness
Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute recently participated in a manatee rescue in North Carolina near the Tar River. The distressed female manatee, weighing 855 pounds and measuring almost 9 feet, was first sighted in late October and had been observed in distress, including listing in shallow waters. With ambient water temperatures in the low 60's, the manatee’s condition required immediate intervention. The manatee was rescued in partnership with Seaworld, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), North Carolina Aquariums, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina – Wilmington (UNCW), local law enforcement, and other North Carolina partners. Once rescued, the manatee was transported to Seaworld Orlando for rehabilitation with veterinary support during the transport from NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Center for Marine Sciences and Technology. Activities authorized by USFWS and under permit #MA80925C. Photo credit: CMARI, North Carolina Aquariums, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

In September, Dr. Fogarty, Krista Laforest (Ph.D. student), and Grace Purcell (senior undergraduate) were on a field work trip in Bocas del Toro, Panama to observe spawning in the wild for research!?Laforest is focused on studying how climate change and pollution impact the process of coral reproduction and how this could inform us about reproductive success in the future.? On this trip, the lab collaborated with Dr. Whitehead (CMS Nutrient Analysis Facility), Dr. Backstrom (University of North Carolina Wilmington EVS department) and Chris LaClair (UNCW CORMP) to measure light intensity and spectra, turbidity and nutrient analysis, temperature, as well as record soundscapes at the reef site. They?also assessed coral health and of course, monitored coral spawning! After last year’s bleaching event, we were happy to report that corals at this site were still reproducing!?? The team thanks the UNCW Charles L. Cahill Grant for Faculty Scholarship for supporting this project!

CONCEPT: Research-grade ocean color data from a CubeSat? Mission Accomplished! The SeaHawk-HawkEye most definitely "demonstrated the ability to collect research-grade ocean color data from a CubeSat at a relatively low price and illuminates the potential scientific gains from a constellation of similar satellites." Check out the article below article ??? ?? ! #uncwcse And more about the mission: https://lnkd.in/edRwM5Va.
We are delighted to share our article on *High-resolution ocean color imagery from the SeaHawk-HawkEye CubeSat mission*! I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to join this stellar team and work with these folks and the best-in-class ocean color image data. Lots more to come from our team in the months and years ahead, so please stay tuned for some deep dives into the scientific discoveries enabled by this exciting mission. The SeaHawk-HawkEye mission was intended as a "proof of concept," and, as we wrote in the article, we believe it "demonstrated the ability to collect research-grade ocean color data from a CubeSat at a relatively low price and illuminates the potential scientific gains from a constellation of similar satellites." Lots more to do in this *space* ??? ?? ! University of North Carolina Wilmington Earth and Ocean Sciences, UNCW Center for Marine Science, UGA Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, AAC Clyde Space , Cloudland Instruments, Inc., and University of Strathclyde, with huge thanks to the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation who funded this research.
