As Pastor Cassandra Wainright said, we've always known the path to #Peace lies in the hands of community members with lived experience. Only Core Influencers – the people who have been seen and experienced the effects of violence firsthand – have the unique knowledge, wisdom, and power to end violence and make cities across the US better, safer places. It’s time to amplify their voices to enact change. Join us in the fight to #EndGunViolence. #Uncornered #UncorneredUS

Uncornering violence in our communities: a path to a peaceful future.
关于我们
Uncornered utilizes a bold approach to transform urban communities into violence-free neighborhoods by using the power of Core Influencers to unlock the potential of individuals and cities. Core Influencers and Catalysts are both active and former gang-involved leaders who have the proximity and credibility to impact violence in their communities. Uncornered harnesses the power of Core Influencers and Catalysts, giving them support to move from disruption to positive impact. The Uncornered approach provides a college-focused education to empower young people to move away from negative behaviors, instead using their brilliance and leadership to become positive agents of community change. It has key evidence-based components that combine the credibility and trust of community-based mentors, the scaffold of high expectations, and the stability of financial support to provide support, time, and space that Core Influencers and Catalysts need to heal, learn, grow, and succeed. With this scaffold, individuals begin to lift up themselves and influence their crews/networks to create change in their communities.

Gun violence is a public health issue, and #Uncornered is proud to collaborate with partners like Kaiser Permanente and The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention to address its root causes. Alongside 9 fellow grantees of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education, we’re igniting crucial conversations and convening leaders across the anti-violence ecosystem to end cycles of trauma. Thank you to Francisco DePina, David Leopold, and Dr. Jonathan Jay for leading with a public health lens to build a future free of violence. #UncorneredUS #EndGunViolence

Nearly 100% of #Uncornered funding is channeled directly to those with the power to stop gun violence. This year, 70 cents of every dollar we spend will go towards salaries and stipends for Core Influencers – the individuals actively working to disrupt cycles of violence. On top of that, 15-20% of additional budget will be allocated to customized support services, ensuring Core Influencers have the resources and assistance they need to succeed. We firmly believe in the power of Core Influencers to end gun violence. By investing in their work, we see an immediate return in safer streets and stronger communities. Your support is essential in empowering these leaders and making a tangible difference. Each dollar spent is a step towards a safer, more peaceful community. #UncorneredUS #EndGunViolence #CommunitySupport

Gun violence-related trauma does not only alter the brain – it can also create hazardous health impacts and lasting effects on a person's physical body. Here at #Uncornered, we remain committed to helping individuals facing the challenges of gun violence-related trauma by providing mental health resources and support such as group and individual talk therapy, relationship development, and collaborative problem-solving workshops. While we recognize the critical importance of offering these resources after traumatic experiences occur, we wish and work toward a future where these resources are no longer necessary. Through our work, we aim to address the root causes of gun violence, building a world free of shootings and homicides and the trauma that stems from it. Together, we can ensure fewer people endure the harmful effects of gun violence trauma and build a more peaceful future for all. #EndGunViolence #TraumaRecovery #UncorneredUS

This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we would like to thank our Director of Core Influencers Francisco DePina, The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention, and Kaiser Permanente for highlighting the importance of mental health support in the pursuit of peace. At #Uncornered, we wholeheartedly believe that healing is the first step toward a nation without gun violence. To drive meaningful change, we must prioritize pathways to success, starting with opportunities to heal. Together, we can empower individuals and communities and pave the way to a safer world. #EndGunViolence
"Gun violence is a health issue—like in communities where I come from, there’s a lack of education, of opportunities, of health. We need time to heal. And once we heal, we can learn. We can be successful." Francisco DePina, Core Influencer Director, Uncornered. We can help people heal from trauma and prevent gun violence with health-centered approaches. October 10th is #WorldMentalHealthDay. Today brings to light the importance of consistent, affordable, and personalized mental health support. At #Uncornered, we are focused on making a meaningful difference in the mental health of our communities. Before Uncornered came to Kansas City, 0% of Catalysts sought out mental health or spiritual support. By the end of 2023, 39% of Catalysts sought out mental support and 86% sought out spiritual support in Kansas City. Providing strong support structures to those affected by violence is essential to reduce shootings and build a more peaceful future.? #UncorneredUS #MentalHealth?

The U.S. Surgeon General recently released an Advisory on firearm violence as a public health crisis. What does this mean, and why does it matter? Find out from researchers, community leaders, and those on the frontlines of violence prevention in a new video series from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education. First up: Jonathan Jay, DrPH, JD, assistant professor at Boston University School of Public Health, who explains, “People who have themselves been harmed are more likely to cause harm in the future. And criminalization alone does not work to interrupt those cycles.” What works? Health-focused solutions. As September comes to a close, we recognize National #SuicidePreventionMonth and the importance of making mental health resources more accessible for all. ? Research suggests that exposure to violence in various forms is significantly linked to higher rates of depression, suicidal behaviors, and mental health challenges. Whether experienced through gang affiliation, domestic environments, or community conflict, violence can deeply affect an individual's mental well-being, increasing the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions. ? A recent study from the JAMA Network Open found that over 27% of teens newly diagnosed with depression had suicidal thoughts within a year of experiencing violence. Researchers at Michigan State University also found that gang membership alone is associated with a 67% increase in suicidal thoughts and a 104% increase in suicide attempts. ? Addressing and preventing violence – along with providing support when it occurs – can play a critical role in reducing suicide risk and breaking cycles of harm. ? At #Uncornered, we are committed to expanding #MentalHealth resources and offering targeted support to former gang members and those affected by violence, empowering them to build futures free from these destructive cycles. ?
