Last week, the IOP Speaker Series hosted "Trump Won, Now What? Political Polarization in America" with UNC professor John Rose. During the event, we discussed initial reactions to the election and talked through ideas of how and why each party failed (or succeeded) to reach different voting demographics. We also spoke about Trump built a community through his focus issues and the messaging, both making him seem relatable and increasing his voter turnout. Here are some quotes from the event: “MAGA seems to have been able to build a sense of family, tribe, and community” - Student in attendance “The liberal side tend to think in terms of race, gender, sexuality…in terms of intersectionality” - Professor Rose “American voters tend to associate Trump with good economics” - Student in attendance “Trump targeted simple things that American care about - wallets, immigration, and safety” - Student in attendance “This election really wasn’t about policy, it was about identity & tribe” - Professor Rose? Special thanks to Dr. Rose for facilitating this event.
