Tomorrow is National Family Health History Day! ???? This holiday season, talk to your relatives about your family's health history — by knowing which conditions your relatives have, you can learn if you’re also at risk. This is essential to keeping you healthy. At UNC Health Rex, our dedicated team of genetic counselors is here to help. They offer comprehensive genetic counseling and testing to understand your risk of hereditary cancer. By knowing your family history of cancer and having genetic testing, you and your doctors can make informed decisions about screening for cancer and offer ways to reduce your risk. #FamilyHealthHistoryDay

For people at high risk of complications from the flu, COVID-19, RSV and other viruses, getting sick isn’t an inconvenience. It can result in severe illness, hospitalization or even death. “People who are at high risk of complications because of age or chronic illness must exercise extra caution during winter sickness season," says UNC Health family medicine physician Sarah Ruff, MD. https://lnkd.in/ea-gd-8E

Dr. Shelton “Shelley” Earp, former director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, will deliver the keynote address for UNC-Chapel Hill at the 2024 Winter Commencement on Dec. 15 at the Dean E. Smith Center. Earp said that his key to career success was a combination of being curious and excited about what he was doing, knowing how to write and dealing with rejection. “Your ideas aren't going to work, your papers are going to get rejected, your grants are going to have to be rewritten,” Earp said. “And if you really love what you're doing, you can get over those setbacks and get up the next day and live to fight again.” https://lnkd.in/g3JwgQDU

If your loved one has finally sought treatment for their drinking or drug use, they are starting a journey that will require care and support. "We know that if a person has family and friends who take an interest and engage in their treatment, the outcome is better, so show up for your loved one," says Dan Velez, MSW, a licensed clinical social worker and clinical supervisor at UNC Substance Treatment and Recovery (STAR).
