The upcoming COPs are key opportunities for global leaders to advance solutions that protect vulnerable ecosystems?around the world,?like coral reefs. I’m proud to highlight United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF)’s support for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs in driving innovative financing for nature. An example is the recent?debt-for-nature swap in Indonesia—a landmark deal focused on coral reef conservation that underscores the importance of targeted financial mechanisms in bridging the funding gap for nature conservation. In partnership with the Governments of the United States and Indonesia, as well as GFCR implementing partners, this deal redirects?US$35 million of Indonesia’s debt towards protecting critical reef ecosystems, including the Bird’s Head and Lesser Sunda-Banda Seascapes, home to 75% of all known coral species. Yet, we recognize that much more remains to be done. As we approach #COP16, UNCDF reaffirms its commitment to using blended finance to meet the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework. ?? https://bit.ly/3NuE9yW

Join us for a presentation of the Nature Investment Facility during the UN Biodiversity Conference #COP16 in Cali, #Colombia! The #GlobalBiodiversityFramework (GBF) calls on the public and private sector to work together to transform our relationship with nature and address the nature-related funding gap.?We must turn the GBF into action and we can do that through the Nature Investment Facility. This COP 16 event will feature our founding partners UNESCO, UNDP, and United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) to present the Facility and highlight remarks by high-level representatives from the Facility’s programme countries, such as Burundi and Thailand. We will also hear from members of the private sector regarding their investments in nature, including partnerships for sustainability, and the positive impact of these initiatives on local ecosystems and communities. ???? The Hamburg Sustainability Conference (#HSC24) is an opportunity for UNCDF to showcase its work in #LDCs like Zimbabwe. ???? UNDP, UNCDF and partners have come together to create a vehicle that will bring investments to develop the renewable energy sector, effectively crowding in the private sector. ?? UNDP is bringing technical expertise, while UNCDF is providing a $8M loan, which will leverage $3M from the Zimbabwe Development Bank and bring in $39M from private investors. At the Climate Mobility Summit, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) signed an agreement to work together to protect vulnerable communities from the effects of sea-level rise. This Memorandum of Understanding will lead to new innovative insurance products for climate change-impacted communities, and will be supported with knowledge and data from our partners at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
