?? 4th anniversary of the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR)! ???? Co-founded by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the UNDP, and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), GFCR has emerged as the largest UN facility to support a blended finance mechanism dedicated to Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. UNCDF structured GFCR’s blended finance approach, providing technical assistance, incubation finance in partnership with key donors. A GFCR secretariat, hosted by UNCDF, manages a diverse portfolio of projects, including coral reef insurance, sustainable aquaculture, and blue carbon credits. These efforts have driven transformative action across 20+ vulnerable coastal countries, protecting coral refugia—reefs with the highest likelihood of surviving #ClimateChange. Thanks to the support of key donors such as the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, PRINCE ALBERT II OF MONACO FOUNDATION USA , and the governments of Germany, France, Canada, among others, as well as investment partners like Pegasus Capital Advisors, Green Climate Fund, and Minderoo Foundation, GFCR has achieved significant milestones: ?? Catalytic support to 60+ reef-positive businesses and financing facilities ?? 1.69 million hectares of coral reefs under improved management ?? 2.5 million hectares of MPAs with sustainable financing mechanisms ?? The launch of the first-ever debt-for-nature swap for coral reefs in Indonesia ?? Large-scale private investments in sustainable agriculture, seaweed, ecotourism, and pollution management ?? $60M+ leveraged in public and private financing alongside GFCR capital By strengthening #coralreef ecosystems, GFCR enhances critical services like coastal protection and food security, benefiting 1 billion people in coastal communities. Yet, our work continues. By 2030, GFCR aims to: ? Support 400+ reef-positive businesses ? Strengthen resilience for 20M+ people ? Protect 3M hectares of coral reefs (12.5% of the world’s remaining reefs) ? In Tanzania, alongside Sida, Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, and local partners, UNCDF spearheaded the first subnational green bond in East Africa. This is how innovative financing drives progress—bringing water services to 26,000 people.

By combining catalytic finance with local expertise, UNCDF is ramping up to unlock public and private capital in high-risk environments. Together with World Food Programme and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), we’re leading initiatives from remittances in the Pacific to financing MSMEs in Rwanda.
