#UNC music professor Anna Gatdula studies how the atomic bomb influences music, art and culture. Gatdula says her research bridges aesthetic theory, cultural history, and science and technology studies, exploring the connections between media, performance, society and nuclear technoscience. In an interview with UNC Research, Gatdula also revealed that her 2022 research trip to New Mexico was delayed because of an "onsite film production" — that was later revealed to be filming for Christopher Nolan’s "Oppenheimer." A decade-long #UNC archaeological dig is revolutionizing our understanding of Jewish religious and cultural life. Since 2011, the Huqoq international research team, led by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill archeologist Jodi Magness, has unearthed magnificent mosaics and the remains of two synagogue buildings. Researchers recently published findings about the discovery of gold and silver coins from the 14th and 15th centuries. #UNC undergraduate student Juan Castillo researches how alcohol use disorder affects the brain — and how to reverse its negative effects. Castillo, a junior and neuroscience major, is interested in the impact of binge-drinking on adolescent brains, from inflammation to the development of Alzheimer’s disease later in life. In 2022, nearly 5,800 people died from alcohol-related causes in N.C. and 32,000 people visited local emergency rooms for acute alcohol intoxication, according to the N.C.
