  • In mid-March, UNCW researchers held a health equity simulation with students, staff, and community members to explore the challenges faced by populations struggling with basic needs like housing, employment, and healthcare. Participants were divided into families, each role-playing a family member with a specific profile and limited resources. They navigated mock-ups of public transportation, grocery stores, housing, employment, and healthcare. Clinical Assistant Professors Colette Waddill and Pam Balogh from the School of Nursing, along with Jenna Dick, the College's Community Engagement and Health Equity Program Manager, led the event. The simulation provided valuable lessons for students preparing for careers in public health, social work, and nursing, helping them better understand the realities their future clients or patients may face. • Ayanni Hyman ’25 knew early on in her college career that she wanted to make an impact on her communities, and she found outlets to do so. Hyman wanted to find a way to support and help those who are unable to advocate for themselves, which is what led her to major in public health. “I was also drawn to the field because of its diverse opportunities, allowing me to work alongside professionals from various backgrounds,” Hyman said. “The ability to directly interact with and serve communities has been such a rewarding experience as an undergraduate student.” Learn more about Hyman’s journey here: https://lnkd.in/enq6e9Am
