Our team had a blast last week at #AAMC24! We spent our time discovering new ways to ??????????, ??????????, and ????????.
Our medical students are extraordinary! In the midst of their studies, Michael Ly competed in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, one of the seven world major marathons. Meanwhile, Ross Davis and Trinity Morrow competed in IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina, a triathlon consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. “Physically and mentally, it keeps me well," Morrow said. "If I’m on the bike, I watch videos or do flash cards. If I want to catch up with a friend, we go for a run together.” https://lnkd.in/e7quS2_c

Today is the day after #veteransday, and it feels symbolic to me. Why? Because "the time after" for military veterans can be fraught with uncertainty, disorientation and difficulty in transitioning into a civilian world. Veterans that I've worked with also describe a sense of loneliness. Civilians can't easily relate to intense deployment experiences or the military's hyper-reliance on "team hood" and discipline. US Navy Veteran Nick Wiley spoke about this in a recent blog post highlighting the joint partnership between UNC School of Medicine - Offices of Medical Student Education and Blue Cross NC: “When you’re in the military, you have a spot. You know where you are, where you stand,” Wiley says. “When you get out, it’s very easy to feel lost, that you don’t have a purpose." That's why I'm so proud of my alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for being there "the day after" to provide education, support and resources to help #veterans find a meaningful next chapter. Thank you to all who serve. And thank you to all who serve those who serve. https://lnkd.in/gujEkQNS

The Comprehensive Advanced Medical Program of Spanish (CAMPOS) celebrated its 20th anniversary last month! “For me, it’s a very personal reward that these students continue to be motivated to do extra work during this very busy time in medical school and continue to extend that vision they had when they enrolled and applied,” said Marco Alemán, MD, program director of CAMPOS. https://lnkd.in/ejmSde6A

We're proud to have Kelley giving back to so many of our students in Charlotte. ??????????????????: Family Medicine ?????????????? ???????? ?????? ????????????????: Assistant Dean and Campus Director for the UNC School of Medicine’s Charlotte Campus & Associate Program Director for the Novant Health Family Medicine Residency ???????????????? ???????? ?????????? ???????? ????????????: I appreciate being reminded almost daily of the joy and privilege it is to serve as a physician by the residents and medical students I get to work alongside! As a family physician, I value the opportunity to care for families at all ages and stages of their lives—I take particular pride in being able to use my certification in Breast-feeding and Lactation Medicine to care for new parents as they feed their babies; those moments are really special. Additionally, I appreciate that my career in academic family medicine—and especially my colleagues—support me in being present to my family so that I can practice family while being a family physician. ???????????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ????????????????: Search out the specialty and community where you fit—where you can be authentically you within medicine.?Also, learn all you can from each patient and each educator/colleague who crosses your path, both now and in the future.
This year we were honored to have Michael L. Zollicoffer '85 (MD) join us as the speaker for the 2024 Zollicoffer Lecture and Banquet! Named after Michael's father, Dr. Lawrence Zollicoffer, the fourth African-American graduate of the UNC School of Medicine, the Zollicoffer Lectureship was established in 1981 by members of the UNC chapter of the Student National Medical Association.
