Yesterday, UNC Health Blue Ridge leadership and teammates had the privilege of honoring Blake Young and Haley Fortenberry from McDowell County EMS with a stork pinning! Both Blake and Haley worked through many harrowing conditions during Hurricane Helene, one being an enroute baby delivery. The quick actions and medical knowledge of this team ensured an outcome of both a healthy baby and mom. We're grateful for all of the amazing women and men in emergency services that care for our community!

Congratulations to our newest Carolina Care Champion, Dr. Caraway! The nomination stated: "I was able to be in a family conversation with Dr. Caraway about how dementia had taken over a 99-year-old mother’s life, now causing her to function on the level and a one-year-old. The way he was able to navigate that tough conversation was touching. The son of that patient raved about Dr Caraway during and after discharge. He was able to provide information to that son with ease, understanding, and compassion. I have also had the privilege to work with his teams' multiple times and feel that he improves each round he works in the hospital setting. His documentation has been stated to be one of the best in the hospital and Dr. Caraway is thorough, well spoken, thoughtful, and an all-around great coworker. He is able to make tough conversations seem easy, the way he speaks to families and patients is amazing. I would feel fully comfortable having him take care of my family members and have no doubt in my mind that he will be the best addition to UNC Health Blue Ridge after graduation."

Congratulations to our newest Carolina Care Champion, Christine Song! Christine's nominator said: "Throughout the years, our family has been confident in my mom’s care—even when we couldn’t attend her appointments—because of Christine. We didn’t worry about language barriers or critical details getting lost in translation. Christine was always there to bridge the gap, and I know the FNPs and doctors she works with appreciate her deeply for it. She has a deep respect for her elderly Hmong patients. She never dismisses their traditional practices but instead works with them to find a balance. She goes the extra mile to ensure they understand their diagnoses, treatment plans, and medications. Christine’s trust within my family runs deep, and we have recommended other Hmong families to Valdese Medical Associates because of her."
