It's a GDTBATH! ???? The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has once again been named a Top Producing Institution for the Fulbright Association U.S. Students Program. The university has earned this distinction from the U.S. Department of State 15 of the last 16 years, but this is the first time Carolina has produced more Fulbright U.S. students than any other public university. Noor Ghazi, professor in the UNC Curriculum for Peace, War and Defense, invited U.S. Ambassador (ret.) Stuart E. Jones into her classroom for an in-depth conversation with students about the liberation of Mosul from ISIS. Ghazi, who was born in Iraq, traveled to Mosul in 2018 and produced?Mosul: Mother of Two Springs, a documentary film which documented life in Mosul under ISIS. Ghazi has also embraced?COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning)?in the classroom to connect Tar Heels with students at the University of Mosul to understand different perspectives on recent events in the region. ?? “When I arrived in Iraq as the ambassador, ISIS was 35 kilometers from Baghdad. It was extremely dangerous,” U.S. ambassador (ret.) Stuart E. Jones told Carolina students at our first Diplomatic Discussion of the semester. ??? ? UNC Global Affairs and The American Academy of Diplomacy hosted Ambassador Jones for a fireside chat, which covered topics ranging from diplomacy, military strategy, terrorism and conflict management. Jones spoke to students about his time as U.S. ambassador to Iraq (2014 - 2017), which saw the rise of ISIS to the forefront of global security concerns. Offering personal insights into the world of foreign service, he spent the day meeting Tar Heels, cadets and faculty to share his experiences in diplomacy.? ? ?? On the first three floors of the FedEx Global Education Center, 36 new photos are now on display as part of the 2024-25 Carolina Global Photography Competition and Exhibition. ???? More than 70 guests — photographers and finalists, friends and families — attended a reception to celebrate the opening of this year's exhibition and recognize featured photographs and photographers. ??? This year’s finalists — chosen from more than 500 submissions — were taken on six continents and in 24 countries and celebrate the exhibition's theme of appreciating life’s, often unrecognized, quiet moments. UNC Global Affairs invites the Carolina community to view the exhibition in the FedEx Global Education Center, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., or in the?virtual gallery?on our website. ?? On Feb. 4, Carolina's Vice Provost for Global Affairs and Chief Global Officer Barbara Stephenson spoke at the first event in a speaker series hosted by the WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA (WAC-WNC) at the University of North Carolina Asheville. At the heart of Stephenson's talk was a consideration of America's place in the world and a look at the impact of globalization from the 1990s to now. Stephenson serves as vice chair of the board of the World Affairs Councils of America and drew on her 34 years as a distinguished diplomat, former U.S. ambassador, international leader and prior dean of the Leadership and Management School at the Foreign Service Institute to answer questions from the audience.
