Every great leader I’ve met has used overfunctioning at some point to manage relationship difficulties. High-performing leaders often overfunction because they want to support their team and ensure success. However, there’s a crucial difference between helping and overfunctioning. Helping involves providing support when needed and then stepping back to let others take charge. Overfunctioning, on the other hand, involves stepping in and doing the work for others, even when they could handle it themselves. It’s essential to recognize this distinction, as overfunctioning can easily slip into micromanaging—a behavior that undermines trust, autonomy, and creativity. Leaders who overfunction tend to think they’re being helpful, but in reality, they may be sending a message that they don’t trust their team to handle the work. This can create a culture of dependency, where team members look to the leader to solve every problem rather than taking initiative. Read the full article: https://loom.ly/gt1dZpo ?? Developing Strategies to Balance Pursuit and Overfunctioning To become an emotionally mature leader, it’s crucial to develop strategies that help you balance the instinct to pursue and the tendency to overfunction. Here are a few strategies to help you grow in these areas: 1. Recognize the Pursuit Instinct and Set Boundaries When you notice yourself pursuing someone who seems distant, take a step back. Ask yourself if this pursuit is necessary or if it might be pushing them away further. Sometimes, giving people space is the best way to allow them to re-engage on their own terms. 2. Empower Rather Than Overfunction Practice the art of delegation and trust your team to handle responsibilities on their own. Instead of stepping in to fix every problem, offer guidance and then give them the autonomy to complete tasks in their own way. This empowers your team and shows that you trust their abilities.
