Strategies to Manage Anxiety Without Triangling or Overfunctioning To grow as a leader, it’s essential to find healthier ways to manage anxiety and relationship difficulties. Here are a few strategies to help you navigate these dynamics without resorting to triangling or overfunctioning: 1. Practice Direct Communication Instead of bringing a third person into the situation, engage in direct, open communication with the person involved. Address the issue calmly and constructively, focusing on resolution rather than blame. 2. Empower Rather Than Overfunction When you feel anxious about a team member’s performance, resist the urge to take over their responsibilities. Instead, empower them to take ownership by providing clear guidance and support, while holding them accountable for their role. 3. Set Boundaries for Yourself Manage your own anxiety by setting boundaries around your involvement in other people’s responsibilities. When you feel the urge to step in, remind yourself that it’s okay to allow others to handle their own work, even if they struggle initially.Every great leader I’ve met has used overfunctioning at some point to manage relationship difficulties. High-performing leaders often overfunction because they want to support their team and ensure success. However, there’s a crucial difference between helping and overfunctioning. Helping involves providing support when needed and then stepping back to let others take charge. Overfunctioning, on the other hand, involves stepping in and doing the work for others, even when they could handle it themselves. It’s essential to recognize this distinction, as overfunctioning can easily slip into micromanaging—a behavior that undermines trust, autonomy, and creativity. Leaders who overfunction tend to think they’re being helpful, but in reality, they may be sending a message that they don’t trust their team to handle the work. This can create a culture of dependency, where team members look to the leader to solve every problem rather than taking initiative.... Read the full article: https://loom.ly/FNJeivQ ?? Understanding Relationship Triangles: A Natural Part of Human Interaction To be honest, relationship triangles are neither inherently good nor bad; they simply are. They are ubiquitous, they are natural, and they are a part of the human way of managing relationship difficulties and anxiety. Every relationship system involves triangles—three people or entities connected in such a way that tension or conflict between two of them is managed by involving the third. In family systems theory, relationship triangles are considered a fundamental way of managing emotional anxiety. When two people experience tension, it’s common to bring in a third person to ease the strain. This third party provides stability, albeit temporarily, by diffusing the anxiety across the triangle. Triangles are a natural aspect of how we relate to others, whether in family settings, friendships, or the workplace. For leaders, the question isn’t whether or not to engage in triangles—they’re inevitable. Instead, the question becomes: What type of relationship triangles am I forming? Are these triangles constructive and purposeful, or do they create additional tension and conflict? Read the full article here: https://loom.ly/XdUTHKk ?? Ready to lead with clarity and purpose? ??
