The Role of Self-Regulation in Managing Sabotage Self-regulation is one of the most important skills a leader can develop in the face of sabotage. Sabotage can trigger a range of intense emotions—anger, frustration, disappointment—but reacting impulsively to these emotions can escalate the situation and damage relationships. Rabbi Edwin Friedman emphasized the importance of self-regulation, stating that leaders who can avoid becoming reactive in response to others’ reactivity will be more successful at overcoming sabotage. This doesn’t mean ignoring the problem or suppressing your emotions; rather, it means managing your reactions thoughtfully and calmly, even when provoked. Self-regulation allows you to respond with clarity rather than reacting out of frustration. This approach not only sets a positive example for your team but also creates a space..... The Roots of Sabotage: Understanding Why It Happens Sabotage rarely arises out of nowhere. In most cases, it begins when a team member perceives a threat and feels a surge of anxiety or fear. This fear might stem from feeling marginalized, fearing loss of control, or sensing a change that challenges their sense of security. When people become afraid, they often default to survival tactics, which can be immature and reactive. Sabotage is one way individuals attempt to cope with their anxiety and regain a sense of control, even if their actions undermine the group’s goals. Common signs of sabotage include: Attacking the leader’s ideas or decisions with a confrontational or undermining tone. Forming alliances with other team members to resist or subvert the leader’s goals. Gossiping to sow doubt or create division within the team. Resigning or withdrawing from active participation as a way of showing dissatisfaction or defiance. While these tactics can be frustrating and disruptive, it’s essential to remember that sabotage is often driven by..... Read the full article here: https://loom.ly/VCPyDmw ?? Strategies to Manage Anxiety Without Triangling or Overfunctioning To grow as a leader, it’s essential to find healthier ways to manage anxiety and relationship difficulties. Here are a few strategies to help you navigate these dynamics without resorting to triangling or overfunctioning: 1. Practice Direct Communication Instead of bringing a third person into the situation, engage in direct, open communication with the person involved. Address the issue calmly and constructively, focusing on resolution rather than blame. 2. Empower Rather Than Overfunction When you feel anxious about a team member’s performance, resist the urge to take over their responsibilities. Instead, empower them to take ownership by providing clear guidance and support, while holding them accountable for their role. 3. Set Boundaries for Yourself Manage your own anxiety by setting boundaries around your involvement in other people’s responsibilities. When you feel the urge to step in, remind yourself that it’s okay to allow others to handle their own work, even if they struggle initially.Every great leader I’ve met has used overfunctioning at some point to manage relationship difficulties. High-performing leaders often overfunction because they want to support their team and ensure success. However, there’s a crucial difference between helping and overfunctioning. Helping involves providing support when needed and then stepping back to let others take charge. Overfunctioning, on the other hand, involves stepping in and doing the work for others, even when they could handle it themselves. It’s essential to recognize this distinction, as overfunctioning can easily slip into micromanaging—a behavior that undermines trust, autonomy, and creativity. Leaders who overfunction tend to think they’re being helpful, but in reality, they may be sending a message that they don’t trust their team to handle the work. This can create a culture of dependency, where team members look to the leader to solve every problem rather than taking initiative.... Read the full article: https://loom.ly/FNJeivQ ??
