As Co-Chair of SDSN Europe, I’m excited to announce the launch of the 2025 European Sustainable Development Report #ESDR2025, alongside Jeffrey Sachs, Guillaume Lafortune, Grayson Fuller, Angelo Riccaboni, and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network team. This year’s #ESDR2025 takes a close look at the EU’s journey toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs, showcasing progress, addressing challenges, and identifying actionable solutions for a sustainable future. The report will be presented at the European Economic and Social Committee #EESC high-level debate tomorrow, 29 January 2025 (10:00–11:30 CET), focusing on the role of sustainable food systems in achieving the SDGs and advancing Agenda 2030. This year has been one of #collaboration, #research, and #innovation, aiming towards progress for a #sustainablefuture. We’re excited to share key highlights from 2024 and look forward to a promising 2025! ?? ?????????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ???????????????????? We published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, reports, and working papers on sustainable energy, urban hazard mitigation, and decision-making under uncertainty. Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri's Elgar Encyclopedia of Water Policy was also published. In 2025, we’ll release two books: Elgar Companion to the Economics of the SDGs and Elgar Companion to Europe and the SDGs. ?????????????????????? ???????????????????????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????????????????????? We expanded our portfolio which includes 100 interdisciplinary research projects, spanning 120+ countries. Newly funded Horizon Europe projects cover soil regeneration, circular bioeconomy, climate resilience, and waterfront coalitions with $25 million in funding. We also launched the UNCC-GIH City Challenge at #COP29, while the SDSN Global Climate Hub remains the culmination of the cross-disciplinary of our work. ???????????????????????? ?????????? ?????? ???????????????????????????? ?????? ?????????? & ?????????????? ???????????? We developed tools like #AE4RIAMetrix to align sustainability strategies with ESG & SDG frameworks and the #SDGTracker, a machine-learning application for analyzing SDGs.?Our report with Huawei defines Green Digital Skills. We participated in key global events, as #UNGeneralAssembly, Summit of the Future, #NYClimateWeek, #EAERE2024, #STSForum. At COP29 we organized five panels and contributed to over 20 sessions. Our team delivered presentations at 100+ conferences, advancing science-based policies for global sustainability. ?????????????????????? ?????????????????? ?????????????????? We trained over 80 professionals in ESG and SDGs through our UN SDSN ESG course. We also hosted interns and we offer more than 70 #freecourses in business transformation, circular economy, and sustainability through our Erasmus projects. ???????????????????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ???????????? We welcomed 15 new researchers to our team, expanding our global impact and received notable recognitions, including the Sustainable Development Unit - ATHENA RC’s election as an #EUClimatePact member and our Catalyst project’s shortlisting for the QS Awards. Driving Climate Action at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan Last month, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network had the privilege of being present at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku, where we moderated and participated in several events and high-level panel discussions on key climate-related topics, including innovative solutions, finance, science, and sustainability. On November 13th, Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri, Chair of the SDSN Global Climate Hub and Co-Chair of SDSN Europe, joined the UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub’s 11th Systemic Innovation Workshop. The workshop explored how to meet core human needs—nutrition, health, shelter, mobility, clothing, leisure, energy, and education—while aligning with climate and sustainability goals. ?? The systemic approach is at the heart of the ARSINOE_EU project, funded by the EU and supported by SDSN. Through its Systems Innovation Approach (SIA), ARSINOE tackles the complexity and interconnectedness of our societies and economies, emphasizing the importance of cross-sectoral strategies to address climate challenges effectively. ????
