??Call for Papers Calling on academics, policymakers or development practitioners working in the fields of justice, human rights and the rule of law in Africa.?? Here's an opportunity to contribute to the Academic Conference on #Africa 2024 theme and shape Africa's future through #research. Selected authors will be invited to present their research and findings at a presentation event aimed at fostering dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration in addressing Africa’s development challenges and transformative opportunities.?? OSAA is hosting the conference on the theme “Power, Justice and the People: Human Rights and the Rule of Law for Africa’s Transformation from 3 to 5 December. Related to the conference, OSAA is calling for submissions of original and innovative papers, case studies and policy analyses on two thematic areas. Through this call, OSAA seeks to strengthen African voices in global policy discourse by examining governance, justice, human rights, and economic democracy through themes that acknowledge and leverage Africa’s distinctive historical, social, and cultural landscape. The goal is to critically analyze the pathways to establish justice systems that resonate with African realities and promote sustained human rights and the rule of law.?? ?? Theme 1: "Economic Democracy as a Foundation for Political Justice in Africa"? This theme explores how economic democracy—the fair distribution of resources and opportunities— serves as a critical foundation for political justice and the realization of human rights across Africa. Western democratic models often prioritize political institutions but tend to overlook the role of economic justice in fostering environments where citizens can fully exercise their rights. We invite papers that examine how economic democracy can foster environments that protect political freedoms and human rights, ensuring that these rights are meaningful and accessible to all.?? ??? Theme 2: "?Reimagining the Rule of Law: Merging Traditional and Contemporary Justice Systems in Africa"? This theme invites an exploration of how traditional African governance frameworks, grounded in communal values and restorative practices, can inform and enhance modern justice systems. Prior to the colonial imposition of Western legal models, many African societies developed sophisticated, locally adapted justice structures. These traditional systems emphasized fairness, community harmony, and conflict resolution in ways that often resonate more deeply with African societies than Western models.? Submissions will be accepted in English, French or Portuguese. Submit abstracts by 22 December 2024 at https://bit.ly/48Nbejr For more information and submission guidelines visit: https://bit.ly/3YoQaMv #AcademicAfrica2024

Trading up: How carbon markets can help development and the planet. The #WeeklyTradecast?looks at how carbon markets can help the most vulnerable countries address inequalities and protect the planet with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Paul Akiwumi and Jean-Paul Adam from the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa. Least developed countries (LDCs) suffer much of the human and economic toll of climate change – even though they do little damage themselves. To help them, UNCTAD's latest report on LDCs looks at how the trading of carbon to mitigate climate change can also open up extra funds for development. Carbon trading seeks to limit emissions by allowing production in one place, such as a factory, to be offset against reductions in another place. But critics say it gives rich countries a licence to pollute and that many developing countries see few benefits. How can carbon trading help support sustainable and inclusive growth? Tune in to Paul Akiwumi and Jean-Paul Adam to find out. Full episode: https://ow.ly/PRaZ50U0i5U

On 14 November, we will launch our 2024 flagship report, "Unpacking Africa’s #Debt: Towards a Lasting and Durable Solution." This latest report on Africa’s development, which is based on this year’s Report of the United Nations Secretary-General on the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (#NEPAD), confronts the urgent need to reform #Africa’s debt structures, providing a roadmap for African nations to escape the constraints of unsustainable debt, reclaim fiscal space and refocus resources on a #SustainableDevelopment agenda. In the post-COVID-19 economic landscape, Africa’s debt challenges have become an increasing barrier to development. For example, more than 40 per cent of African countries allocate more funds to debt service than to health. This report offers actionable recommendations to help African countries regain financial autonomy, fortify their economies, and invest more directly in their citizens' future, including: ?? Enhanced Support from Multilateral Development Banks ?? Comprehensive Debt Relief Measures ?? G20 Common Framework Improvements ?? Incentives Linked to SDG Progress ?? Reforming the Global Financial Architecture ?? Transparent #Credit Ratings Our report is a call to action for African nations to reclaim their rightful financial autonomy, and for Africa’s development partners to transform the international financing mechanism into a contemporary win-win platform that prioritize long-term development solutions tailored to Africa’s realities. Through these actions, African countries can boost targeted investments to effectively impact the lives and livelihoods of their people. Join us and participate in the launch event. Share widely with your network. ?? #ICYMI On 19 September 2024, ahead of the United Nations Summit of the Future, the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) and the SDG Academy of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) organized a pre-launch of a Special Issue of the African Journal of Sustainable Development (AJSD), which is scheduled to come out later this year. This journal focuses on African scholarship related to the SDGs, multilateral cooperation, and the future of global governance, and highlights the outcome of the United Nations Academic Conference on Africa 2023. Last year's conference, which OSAA hosted in collaboration with the UN Academic Impact, provided a platform for African academics to initiate conversations on the status of development in Africa. The conference's theme, “Redefining African Futures: The State, Resilience, and Pathways to Progress,” highlighted the need to look beyond the conventional narratives that have long dominated global discourses on Africa, and to instead elevate the voices of African scholars, whose insights and lived experiences are crucial to understanding and addressing the continent’s complex realities. The importance of African scholarship to the global dialogue is central, as the continent seeks to reclaim its rightful place at the global leadership table. This includes highlighting scholarship from across Africa, where the impact of an outdated international mechanism to boost the achievement of the SDGs is strongly felt. Watch the video if you missed the exchanges or would like to re-live the pre-launch discussion. ??Watch the pre-launch video for critical insights, breakthrough solutions and transformative ideas aimed at accelerating progress toward achieving the SDGs ??https://bit.ly/4f2fEW5
